The Starry Night: The Sky That Turns Within Me
Darkness is not always an enemy: sometimes it is the only place where the stars can be seen.
By Architect Imad DarouichUpdated 6 min read

This Starry Night poem lets the sky Van Gogh painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889 speak for itself. It turns above a sleeping village, its stars become open eyes and the cypress rises like a finger of fire, while the painting reflects that some things in the soul appear only at night and that art gives a wound its language.
A GLIMPSE OF THE MASTERPIECE
1889The Starry Night, 1889
One of Vincent van Gogh’s greatest works.
And an icon of modern art.
He painted it in Saint-Rémy, France.
Amid isolation, pain, and contemplation.
Van Gogh did not merely paint at night.
He painted what night does to the soul.
He dissolved the sky into spirals.
Of blue, yellow, and light.
As though the entire universe were moving.
As though the heavens were praying.
The stars are not distant points.
They are beings made of light.
Pulsing above a sleeping village.
The earth below is quiet.
But the sky knows no stillness.
And here, the epic begins.
THE SKY THAT TURNS WITHIN ME
I am not a sky above you.
I am the sky within you.
I turn as the heavens turn.
I carry the night within my chest.
And I whisper to the darkness:
Plant your light within me.
For light that never knew darkness
لا يعرف معنى النجاة.cannot know the meaning of salvation.
THE WHIRLPOOL OF THE SOUL
Within my spirals,
يتكسر الأزرق على الريح.blue breaks against the wind.
And the stars become
Eyes that never sleep.
Watching a tiny village.
And perhaps watching us as well.
I do not see spheres of fire.
I see voices made of light.
Praising within the silence of existence.
Every star says something.
Yet humanity is too distant
كي يسمع.to hear.
THE SLEEPING VILLAGE
Below,
تنام القرية.the village sleeps.
Small houses stand together.
Like children beneath night’s blanket.
The rooftops conceal dreams.
The windows guard stories.
Behind one window,
ربما طفل يحلم.perhaps a child is dreaming.
Behind another,
امرأة تنتظر.a woman is waiting.
And in a distant house,
ربما رجل لا يستطيع النوم.perhaps a man cannot sleep.
The entire earth is silent.
Yet above it,
السماء تصرخ بالألوان.the sky screams in color.
THE CYPRESS TREE
Then the cypress rises.
But it is not merely a tree.
It is a finger of fire.
Rising from the earth.
Pointing toward infinity.
Its roots are in the earth.
But its body desires the heavens.
As though asking humanity:
Have you not understood yet?
You too are a tree.
Your feet belong to the earth.
But your soul
A PRAYER IN COLOR
I am not a painting.
I am a prayer in oil and color.
Every line within me
ارتعاشة قلب.is the trembling of a heart.
Every circle
دوامة عقل.is a whirlpool of thought.
And every flash
دمعة نجم.is the tear of a star.
I am a confession without words.
A prayer without sound.
And a scream
تعلمت كيف تصبح جميلة.that learned how to become beautiful.
NIGHT IS NOT THE ENEMY
I am a night that never sleeps.
And I know darkness’s secret.
Darkness is not always an enemy.
Sometimes,
هي المكان الوحيد،it is the only place
الذي نستطيع فيه رؤية النجوم.where we can see the stars.
In daylight,
كانت النجوم موجودة.the stars were already there.
But brightness concealed them.
And when night arrived,
كشف ما كان مستورًا.it revealed what had been hidden.
Perhaps we are the same.
Some things within our souls
لا تظهر في الرخاء.do not appear in ease.
They need a night.
So we can finally see them.
VAN GOGH BEFORE THE SKY
Van Gogh stood before the night.
He did not possess the universe.
He possessed only a brush.
And a burdened heart.
And eyes that could see
ما لا يراه الآخرون.what others could not.
He raised his eyes toward the sky.
And saw movement within stillness.
He saw light within darkness.
And he saw beauty
حيث قد يرى غيره الفوضى.where others might see chaos.
Then he placed his brush
على القماش.upon the canvas.
And the universe began to turn.
WHEN PAIN BECAME COLOR
Perhaps pain was present.
But it did not remain merely pain.
It entered the color.
And mixed with blue.
It passed through yellow.
And emerged as a star.
This is the miracle of art.
It does not erase the wound.
It gives the wound a language.
It does not abolish darkness.
It opens a window within it.
WHO IS LOOKING AT WHOM?
Today, you stand before the painting.
And look at the stars.
But after a few moments,
يتغير السؤال.the question changes.
Are you looking at them?
Or are they looking at you?
Is the spiral in the sky?
Or inside your mind?
Is the village asleep?
Or are you the one sleeping?
Did Van Gogh paint the night?
Or did the night
use his hand to paint itself?
THE FINAL MESSAGE
I am The Starry Night.
I do not belong only to Saint-Rémy.
I live within every human being
نظر إلى الظلام،who looked into darkness
ورفض أن يراه فارغًا.and refused to see emptiness.
I am within every heart
ظل يبحث عن نقطة ضوء.that kept searching for a point of light.
I am within every soul
اكتشفت بعد تعب طويل،that discovered after a long struggle
أن النجوم لم تختفِ.that the stars never disappeared.
They were always there.
We simply
لم نكن نراها.could not see them.
I am The Starry Night.
The village beneath me sleeps.
The cypress rises.
The heavens turn.
The stars burn.
And humanity,
فيقف بين الأرض والسماء.stands between earth and heaven.
Asking the ancient question:
Why is there so much beauty
in a world that knows pain?
The painting does not answer.
The sky simply turns again.
And another star begins to glow.
As though saying:
Do not ask the night
Simply raise your head.
And look.
Perhaps the light
أقرب مما تظن.is closer than you think.
