The Scream: A Bridge at the Edge of the Soul

Munch made fear visible and taught colour to scream, and then he put the viewer on the bridge.

By Architect Imad DarouichUpdated 7 min read

A figure with hands over its ears on a bridge under a fiery sky, the subject of this poem about The Scream by Munch

This poem about The Scream by Munch begins with the painting of 1893 and its many versions in paint, pastel and lithography: a thin figure on a bridge under a burning sky while two people walk calmly on. Imad speaks in the figure's voice, covering its ears to catch the sound of colour burning, and ends by turning the question to the viewer.

A GLIMPSE OF THE MASTERPIECE

1893The Scream, Edvard Munch, 1893

It is an icon of existential anxiety.

A visual cry of modern art.

Munch created several versions of it.

In paint, pastel, and lithography.

A slender figure stands upon a bridge.

A face has become a mask.

The sky burns above it.

With red, orange, and fire.

In the distance, two figures walk.

As though nothing has happened.

Yet something immense has happened.

Fear has become visible.

Color has learned how to scream.

A BRIDGE AT THE EDGE OF THE SOUL

The sky here is not a ceiling.

It is an open wound.

Bleeding the color of burning copper.

Dripping evening into the sea.

Even the air seems to melt.

Slipping out of its own skin.

Crawling across the bridge like a serpent.

As though nature has lost its balance.

And I am here.

This face that became a mask.

I no longer possess complete features.

Only an opening for air.

And a throat without a voice.

I listen to something distant.

Yet it comes from within me.

I try to swallow the scream.

But the scream swallows me.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF FEAR

The bridge is perfectly straight.

Like a cold, merciless law.

Yet the sky refuses straightness.

The sea refuses boundaries.

The lines dance with fear.

As though the painting itself trembles.

Red is no longer merely color.

It smells of rust and storm.

Yellow becomes metal upon the tongue.

Blue becomes ancient salt.

Reminding me of something strange:

I am water in human form.

THE OTHERS KEEP WALKING

Two figures remain in the distance.

They walk calmly across the bridge.

They do not turn toward me.

They do not hear what I hear.

As though the bridge were not my artery.

As though the sky were not my skull.

As though the world could continue.

While a single human being collapses.

And therein lies the terror.

An entire world may shatter.

While everyone else keeps walking.

WHY DO I COVER MY EARS?

I press my hands against my ears.

Not to silence the sound.

But to catch it.

The sound of color burning.

The sound of water twisting.

The sound of earth beneath the bridge.

And a sound deeper than them all.

The world turning inward.

And finally confessing:

أنا خائف.I AM AFRAID.

THE BODY THAT BECAME A MIRROR

O my body,

O trembling bridge of nerves,

كيف أصبحت مرآة،how did you become a mirror

for what cannot be seen?

How did skin become a window?

And bone a theater of trembling?

I am not screaming alone.

The city screams behind me.

The sea screams beneath me.

The sky screams above me.

Even silence is screaming.

WHEN SILENCE BECOMES METAL

There is no true silence here.

Silence is heavy metal.

And every step upon the bridge

تحدث شرخًا في الهواء.creates a fracture in the air.

I try to say:

I am here.

But the words do not emerge.

Only vapor leaves my mouth.

It rises toward the sky.

Then becomes part of it.

Perhaps this is why

تبدو السماء كأنها تصرخ.the sky itself appears to scream.

O BRIDGE OF OSLO

O bridge of Oslo,

O boundary between water and fire,

how did Munch turn you into music?

How did he make your lines tremble?

Does wood possess memory?

Does it remember passing footsteps?

Does it remember the weight of fear?

And those who fled without looking back?

Perhaps every bridge remembers.

It is human beings who forget.

I AM SUSPENDED IN THE MOMENT

I am not running away.

Nor am I moving forward.

I am suspended.

Like a comma in time.

If I close my eyes,

I may fall outside the painting.

So I keep them open.

And watch the universe twist.

As though trying to escape

من إطار لا يحتمله.from a frame too small for it.

THE COURT OF THE SCREAM

Suddenly, the scream questions me:

Who are you?

I search for my name.

But my name has disappeared.

I tell her:

I am the one colored by the sky.

She asks me again:

Who gave you this face?

I answer:

Fear.

The scream laughs.

And opens a door for me.

But the door is a circle.

I step through it.

And return to where I began.

I try again.

And return again.

Then I understand.

I am not trapped by the bridge.

I am trapped within myself.

AND NOW... YOU

أنت

And you?

You standing before the painting.

You think you are the observer.

But Munch has deceived you.

He has brought you inside it.

Your step completes the bridge.

Your eyes complete the sky.

Your heartbeat moves the sea.

And that face before you,

ليس غريبًا تمامًا.is not entirely a stranger.

Come closer.

Do not be afraid.

Look into the eyes.

Then ask yourself:

Who is screaming?

Me?

Or you?

THE SCREAM MUNCH HEARD

Place your hand upon your heart.

Remain silent for a moment.

There is an ancient sound.

Older than this painting.

Older than the bridge.

Older than the city.

It is humanity’s first fear.

When it looked toward the sky

ولم يعرف ما وراءها.and did not know what lay beyond.

When it looked within

فاكتشف هاوية أخرى.and discovered another abyss.

FINALE: THE WORLD’S INNER BELL

I am The Scream.

I am not the end of the world.

I am its inner bell.

I do not ask you to flee.

Nor do I ask you to hide.

I ask only one thing.

Listen.

Listen to the sky.

Listen to the sea.

Listen to the city.

Then listen to yourself.

Because the deepest scream

ليست التي يسمعها العالم.is not the one the world hears.

It is the one that remains within.

Until an artist arrives,

يحمل فرشاة بدل الأذن.carrying a brush instead of an ear.

And gives silence a color.

And gives fear a face.

And gives the scream a body.

Then hangs it upon a wall.

So that a century later,

أن الوجه لم يكن وجهه.we discover the face was never his.

IT WAS THE FACE OF US ALL.
