Imad's poem in Arabic and English: a conversation with Vermeer, with the girl in the painting, and with the pearl at her ear.

Imad wrote this Girl with a Pearl Earring poem as a reading of Johannes Vermeer's painting, which hangs in the Mauritshuis in The Hague. It moves line by line in Arabic and English: first a short exchange with the painter, then a long look at the face, the pearl and the dark behind them, and last the full dialogue.
Vermeer said: This is not just a girl, it is the secret of light when it falls upon innocence.
I approached the painting and asked her: Is the pearl heavier than your heart?
She answered with a gaze that can be seen, not heard.
Vermeer smiled: I was searching for a moment, a moment where silence meets eternity.
I told him: You immortalized a child turning into an icon, a woman living between shadow and shine.
The pearl whispered: I am a frozen tear, a suspended prayer, a purity that never dies.
Vermeer said: I placed the blue like pure water, and let the white shine as God’s breath.
I told him: This girl makes the world weep more than a hundred sermons, she is a dialogue between man and heaven.
The painting opened its silent mouth: I do not speak, but I remind you that light is gentler than any power.
Vermeer laid down his brush, I placed my hand on my heart, and we gathered in a prayer without words.

A face emerges from darkness as if the night itself gives birth to a star.
She is not an ordinary girl, but a secret dangling from her ear in the shape of a pearl.
Her gaze is half a question and half an answer, as if conversing with you in eternal silence.
The pearl is not a stone but a small moon,
Illuminating her cheek and deepening the night around her.
That white drop condenses the entire ocean,
Transforming the ear into a horizon where light swims.
Vermeer did not paint her, he summoned her from the unseen.
His colors are not pigments but breaths,
And the canvas is no longer canvas, but a window onto a quiet eternity.
Her face is a mixture of childhood and womanhood,
Between innocence and seduction,
Between the fleeting moment and eternal time.
Every detail carves a question into your heart: who is she?
She does not answer, but leaves you captive to her gaze.
Eyes dark as a bottomless well,
Your soul falls into them and does not wish to return.
Her lips are half a word, half a kiss, half a prayer.
As if about to utter a secret, yet holding it between her teeth.
She is the moment when speech stops to become silent music.
Her background is dark,
But its darkness is not emptiness, but a stage whose lights were dimmed so only her face remains.
Vermeer turned the entire night into a wall of ink,
Then lit a single candle within it: her smile.
The Girl with a Pearl Earring is not a portrait,
But a memory shared between you and the universe.
She is the dream you have not yet seen,
And the love born in you before you knew the meaning of love.
Before her you feel you have been a lover for thousands of years,
Searching for her in the faces of every woman yet never finding her.
But here, in the painting, you have found her at last.
Dialogue with the Girl with a Pearl Earring
He speaks first… Vermeer, with calm eyes, tells me:
This is not just a girl, it is the secret of light when it falls upon innocence.”
I step into the dialogue… I approach the painting and ask her:
Is the pearl heavier than your heart?
She answers with a gaze that is heard through vision, not sound.
Vermeer smiles:
I was searching for a single moment,
A moment where silence meets eternity.”
And I say:
Did you not realize you immortalized a child turning into an icon,
A woman dwelling between shadow and shine?
The pearl itself whispers:
I am a frozen tear,
I am a prayer suspended on a small ear,
I am the testimony that purity never dies.
Vermeer responds:
I placed the blue like pure water,
And let the white shine as if it were God’s breath upon the canvas.”
I tell him:
And do you know, my master,
That this girl makes the world weep more than a hundred speeches?
That she is not merely a face,
But a dialogue between humankind and the heavens?
The painting opens its silent mouth:
I do not speak,
But I remind you that light can be gentler than any power,
And that beauty is the swiftest path to faith.
Vermeer lays down his brush,
I place my hand upon my heart,
And together we meet: painter, painting, and viewer,
In a wordless prayer.
