Omar Khayyam: When Four Lines Could Barely Hold the Universe
A night in Nishapur: Khayyam draws lines and circles, finds his life shorter than his question, and turns to four lines of verse.

Omar Khayyam (1048-1131) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer and poet from Nishapur, who gave a geometric solution of cubic equations, designed the Jalali calendar, and to whom a long tradition attributes quatrains, the rubaiyat. This Omar Khayyam poem by Imad Darouich, in Arabic and English, imagines him at night beside an unsolved problem, and ends with what a short life can still give.
A literary vision inspired by Khayyam’s world.
It is neither a quotation nor a biography.
In Nishapur, night lowered its ceiling.
And Khayyam opened a window in mathematics.
He drew a line; darkness’s walls receded.
He drew a circle, then heard his heart outside.
How could a head contain this universe?
Yet a chest ache for one absent face?
On the table slept an unsolved problem.
Beside it, tea cooled without awaiting proof.
The numbers knew their places on paper.
Only the human kept searching for a place.
Khayyam raised his eyes toward the distant ceiling.
He saw his life was far shorter than his question.
So he took just four lines from silence.
And built wonder a house without a final lock.
In that house, death sat silently.
The poet did not give it the host’s chair.
He opened a door to the breeze and kept the bread warm.
For a hungry person cannot eat knowledge of the heavens.
And a lonely person needs a hand before an explanation.
What use is a scale that weighs sunlight?
If it cannot notice a nearby tear?
Years passed; the city changed its doorways.
Beneath the earth lay a head that had held the sky.
Yet a question escaped the stones of the grave.
And walked toward a reader not yet born.
There, on a page in a distant room,
Khayyam returned to raise life’s ceiling a little.
We will not know everything the sky conceals.
But we can open a window this morning.
And we can stop postponing a word to those we love.
For the life we cannot fully explain,
May shine when we give it one small meaning.
A loaf we share, or a door we open for someone afraid.
Thus, a human being completes what the equation leaves unfinished.
Another poet who wrote in Persian sits with Imad in When Rumi Asked Me About Home, and Rumi's life is told in Jalal al-Din Rumi: The Epic of the Man Who Made Love a Path to God. More poems are in the literature and art collection.
