The Wing That Refused to Be an Addition: Frida Escobedo at the Met
One night the Metropolitan Museum hears knocking under its floor, and the sound comes from a wing that has not been built yet.

The Tang Wing is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's new wing for modern and contemporary art in New York, designed by the Mexican architect Frida Escobedo; the Met broke ground on September 15, 2026, and plans to open it in 2030. Imad's Met Tang Wing fable, in Arabic and English, has the old museum, its guard and its anxious paintings meet a young artist whose work no gallery can yet name.
A Note
In September 2026, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art broke ground on its new wing for modern and contemporary art, designed by architect Frida Escobedo. This is an imagined epic about the meeting of an old building with what has yet to be built.
The Epic
On a quiet night, the museum heard knocking beneath its floor.
It thought an ancient object wanted to come out.
But the sound came from the future.
The guard said, “I see no one.”
The wall said, “I do.”
Frida stood before the building.
She carried no hammer.
She carried a question heavy enough to open stone:
How can tomorrow enter a centuries-old house without sending yesterday away?
In the galleries, the statues woke.
The paintings clutched their frames to their chests.
Some feared new art would arrive and dim their light.
Frida heard their fear.
She drew a threshold joining two eras.
And she gave the light a way to pass gently through.
A young woman entered carrying a work no one knew how to name.
It was not quite a painting.
Nor was it a sculpture.
It held a moving image, fabric marked by a hand, and the sound of a distant home.
The museum asked her, “Which gallery do you belong in?”
She said, “I’m still looking.”
For the first time, the museum did not open its catalogue for her.
It opened a place.
At that moment, the knocking beneath the floor fell silent.
At last, the guard knew who had been there.
It was no ghost from the past.
It was a work not yet made, waiting for a place among those that came before it.
The Ending
The wing will rise, stone by stone.
And the question will remain at its threshold.
Whenever an artist enters and finds no name for their work in the catalogue,
The place will make a little more room.
Only then will the museum know it is still alive.
