Imad wrote this prose poem on the Bedouins of Syria for his Syria Heritage series. From Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa to Hasakah, Palmyra and the Euphrates, he follows the Arab tribes of the desert: the tent as an unwritten constitution where children learn generosity and consultation, coffee poured for the stranger first, and the Nabati poetry their voices carried.

Before borders were drawn on maps,

Before flags rose above buildings,

The tent already stood.

The fire was already burning.

Coffee was poured for the stranger before the relative.

And a word was a covenant never broken.

There...

In the Syrian desert,

Men were born who resembled the horizon.

Wide as the desert.

Honest as the rain.

Stubborn as the mountain.

They owned no palaces.

Yet they possessed honor.

They wore no crowns.

Yet they carried dignity.

From Deir ez-Zor to Raqqa,

From Hasakah to Palmyra,

From the Euphrates to the depths of the desert,

The Arab tribes

Were the arteries of Syrian land.

The Aqeedat.

The Jabour.

The Baggara.

The Busaraya.

And many others among the people of honor.

They were not merely names.

But living chapters in the history of the homeland.

When discord arose,

They stood like dams.

When winds tried to tear the tent apart,

They held firmly to its poles.

And they said:

Syria is one.

As the tent is one.

It cannot be divided.

Nor sold.

Nor handed to strangers.

For the Bedouin knows

That land is not merely soil.

It is memory.

And a homeland is not a map.

But honor.

Therefore,

When a child asked his grandfather:

What is a homeland?

The old sheikh replied:

It is the one thing you never leave...

Even if everyone leaves you.

The Tent... The First University of the Desert

The tent is not fabric.

It is a philosophy.

An unwritten constitution.

Within it a child learns generosity.

Learns consultation.

Learns respect for guests.

And learns that a word is sacred.

In the tent,

Decisions are made.

Conflicts are resolved.

Poems are recited.

Lineages are preserved.

Values are protected.

Around the coffee fire,

Wisdom sits.

History sits.

And the future sits as well.

The Bedouin... Poet of the Desert

The Bedouin was never only a warrior.

He was a poet.

A philosopher.

And a storyteller.

In his voice Nabati poetry was born.

And in his poetry heroism lived.

And within his verses

Love remained alive.

Loyalty remained alive.

And the homeland remained alive.

He wrote upon the sand.

Yet his words outlived stone.

Conclusion

If you wish to know the meaning of authenticity,

Ask the desert.

If you wish to know the meaning of a promise,

Ask a Bedouin elder.

If you wish to know the meaning of homeland,

Ask a man

Born beneath a tent roof,

Raised beneath a sky without limits,

And who carried Syria in his heart

As a rider carries his sword.

For the Bedouins of Syria

Are not merely a past to be told.

They are roots deep in the earth.

And a voice reminding generations

That dignity cannot be bought.

And the homeland cannot be sold.

And that Syria shall remain,

As long as a tent is raised for the guest,

Coffee poured with affection,

And a man says:

I am Syrian...

And I am proud.
