The Play Without a Script: When Life Is a Stage

Actors open their drawers to find no script, and an old theater spends one night finding out who decides how a story ends.

By Architect Imad Darouich11 min read

Cover for a life is a stage poem: a man and a woman face each other on a stage between red curtains, with a marble face, an open book and a bronze mask in front.

All the world's a stage, says Jaques in Shakespeare's As You Like It, comparing a human life to a play. The Play Without a Script takes the life is a stage poem one step further, in Arabic and English: in an old theater the actors find their drawers empty, and over ten chapters they invent a king, refuse their roles, tear up the playwright's pages and look for a last line.

Second cover for The Play Without a Script: a man in a top hat opens his arms on a stage between red curtains, framed by theater masks, an hourglass, a quill and loose pages.
Third cover: a gilded theater with red seats where a small actor faces the giant shadow of a crowned king on stage, an open book flying overhead.

The Epic of Words Born on Stage and Dead Before Becoming Memory

The Beginning

The theater was older than most houses in the city. Its façade was weary, its columns cracked, and its red curtain carried the dust of a hundred years of applause.

In that theater, imaginary kings had died. Women who never existed had lived. Wars had begun and ended before the audience stepped outside. The script. The script was destiny. The actor knew when to love. When to betray. When to weep.

And when to die. Until one night, everything changed. The actors arrived in their dressing rooms. They opened the drawers. They were empty. They searched for their scripts.لم يجدوا شيئًا.They found nothing. The director entered. He carried a white folder.

He opened it before them. There was not a single page inside. “Where is the script?” The director smiled.وقال:And said:«لقد بدأ.»“It has already begun.”

Chapter One: The Page That Refused to Be Written

The director gave every actor a blank sheet.

قال:He said:

This is your character.”

They stared at the pages.

The first actress asked:

But it is blank.”

قال:He replied:

So are you.”

Silence followed.

For the first time, the actors realized they had always lived inside sentences written by others.

One had been brave because a playwright had written courage for him.

Another had been evil because the page commanded him to be evil.

Now, no one knew who he was.

The director said:

Tonight you will not portray characters.”

Tonight you will search for them.”

Chapter Two: The Curtain That Rose upon Nothing

The hall filled. The lights went dark. The bell rang. The curtain rose. Ten actors stood on stage. No scenery. No music. No words. The audience looked at them.

They looked back. A minute passed. Then two. The audience shifted in their seats. Suddenly, a woman in the fifth row called out:«ابدؤوا!»“Begin!” One actor looked at her.وقال:And said:«نحن بدأنا منذ اللحظة التي شعرتِ فيها أن علينا أن نبدأ.»“We began the moment you felt we should begin.”

The audience laughed.قال ممثل آخر:Another actor said:«لماذا ضحكتم؟»“Why did you laugh?” The laughter stopped. And so the first scene was born. No playwright had written it. It was written by the tension between stage and seats.

Chapter Three: The Man Who Invented His Past

An old actor stepped forward.

قال:He said:

I am a king.”

A young actor shouted:

Liar.”

The old man stopped.

He did not know whether he truly was a king.

There was no script to prove it.

قال:He said:

I was a king.”

The young man asked:

“When?”

The old man replied:

Before the play began.”

The audience laughed.

The old actor did not.

He sat on the floor.

He began describing a kingdom that had never existed.

Its rivers.

Its palaces.

Its wars.

The son who betrayed him.

And the queen who died waiting for him.

Ten minutes later, the audience was mourning a kingdom that had existed for only ten minutes.

And there occurred the first miracle:

A fiction told truthfully can build a homeland inside imagination.

Chapter Four: The Actress Who Refused Her Role

An actress approached the old man.

He told her:

You are my daughter.”

She replied:

«لا.»“No.”

He hesitated.

In traditional theater, the script would have settled the matter.

But there was no script.

قال:He insisted:

I know you.”

She answered:

But I do not know you.”

From that simple sentence, an entire conflict was born.

Is a character what a person says about himself?

Or what others say about him?

The old man said:

I am your father because I remember you.”

She replied:

And I am not your daughter because I do not remember you.”

A heavy silence fell.

Suddenly, the play was no longer about a king and his daughter.

It had become about memory itself.

Chapter Five: The Death That Was Never Planned

Halfway through the performance, one actor fell. The audience did not know whether he was acting.

Neither did the actors. An actress approached him.قالت:She said:«انهض.»“Get up.” He did not move.همست:She whispered:«ليس من حقك أن تموت.»“You have no right to die.” He opened his eyes.قال:He said:«ولماذا؟»

“Why not?”قالت:She replied:«لأن موتك غير مكتوب.»“Because your death is not written.” He smiled.«ولا حياتي مكتوبة.»“Neither is my life.” Then he closed his eyes. If there is no script, who decides the ending?

Chapter Six: The Audience Climbs Onto the Stage

A man in the audience stood.

قال:He said:

This is nonsense.”

An actor replied:

Come up and fix it.”

People laughed.

But the man actually climbed onto the stage.

He stood beneath the spotlight.

The actor asked:

“Who are you?”

The man gave his name.

The actor replied:

That is your name outside the theater.”

“Who are you here?”

The man did not know.

At that moment, the audience understood something strange.

We know our names.

Our professions.

Our addresses.

But if all these things are removed…

Who remains?

Chapter Seven: The Revolt of the Characters

The actors began rebelling against one another.قال أحدهم:One said:«نحتاج إلى قصة.»“We need a story.”

“A story is a prison.”قالت ممثلة:An actress said:«نحتاج إلى نهاية.»“We need an ending.”رد آخر:Another answered:«النهاية استبداد.»“An ending is tyranny.” The stage became a tiny republic without a constitution. Every actor wanted to be the protagonist. Every character wanted to become the center of the story. Suddenly, they discovered that absolute freedom does not always create art.

Sometimes it creates noise. Limits are not always prisons. Sometimes limits are the form that allows meaning to be born.

Chapter Eight: The Playwright Who Arrived Too Late

The backstage door opened. A man entered carrying a stack of papers.قال:He said:«توقفوا.»“Stop.”

Everyone looked at him.قال:He continued:«أنا المؤلف.»“I am the playwright.” Silence. He raised the manuscript.«هذه المسرحية الحقيقية.»“This is the real play.” One actor approached him. He took the pages. He read the first page.

Then he looked at the audience.وقال:And said:«لكننا أصبحنا أشخاصًا آخرين.»“But we have become different people.” He tore the page. The playwright shouted.لكن ممثلة قالت:An actress said:«لقد وصلت متأخرًا.»“You arrived too late.”«الشخصيات تعلّمت العيش من دونك.»“The characters have learned to live without you.”

Chapter Nine: The Night the Theater Devoured Its Script

The pages scattered across the stage.

The air began moving them.

Pages beneath the actors’ feet.

Pages over the seats.

One page caught on the curtain.

Another fell into a glass of water.

The script was no longer a script.

It became matter.

Paper.

Debris.

The memory of a play that never happened.

The playwright looked at his pages.

Then at the actors.

For the first time, he understood that a script not lived is not theater.

It is a possibility.

Real theater begins when possibility enters a human body.

Chapter Ten: The Last Line

Midnight approached. The audience remained seated. No one knew how the play should end. Not even the director. All the actors stood in a line. They looked at the audience.ثم قال أحدهم:Then one said:«نحتاج إلى جملة أخيرة.»“We need one final line.”

“Why?”قال:He answered:«لكي يعرفوا أن المسرحية انتهت.»“So they will know the play is over.” A voice came from the back of the hall:«وإذا لم تقولوا شيئًا؟»“What if you say nothing?” The actors looked at one another. Then they sat down.لم يقولوا شيئًا.They said nothing. A minute passed.

Then two. Then five. Finally, one man began to applaud. Another joined him. Then the entire hall. The curtain fell. Did the play end because the curtain fell? Or because the audience decided it had ended?

The Ending

The next morning, the cleaner returned.

He found the stage covered with torn pages.

He collected them one by one.

Among them, he found a blank page.

He turned it over.

There was nothing on it.

He put it in his pocket.

When he returned home, he placed it on the table.

He stared at it for a long time.

Then he wrote a single sentence:

Perhaps we too are living a play without a script.”

Then he stopped.

He did not know what to write next.

And that was the entire idea.

We enter life without receiving the dialogue.

No one gives us the next page.

We improvise love.

We improvise fear.

We improvise failure.

And we improvise courage when catastrophe surprises us.

We speak words and later regret them.

We remain silent when we should have spoken.

We enter scenes for which we never rehearsed.

Then comes a day when we leave the stage.

And one question remains suspended beneath the light:

Were we actors in a story written for us?

Or were we writing ourselves while we performed?

Perhaps the greatest play is not the one whose lines are memorized.

It is the one that makes the human being responsible for the next line.

Life does not hand us a complete script.

It gives us a stage, limited time, and a little light.

Then it tells us: Now… speak.

The Play Without Actors, Imad's ebook fable of an old theater with an empty stage, is its closest companion, and The Cemetery Without Graves follows the same ten-chapter form. More fables are in the human story collection.
