The Birth of Epics: How the Contemporary Epic Began

Why the epic came back, and why its hero today may be an architect facing a city or a reader facing a screen.

Imad's cover for The Birth of Epics: an open book from which a city, a classical head, domes and ribbons rise, a picture of what is a modern epic

3DEPICS is a bilingual library of contemporary epics in Arabic and English by the New York architect Imad Darouich. In The Birth of Epics, Imad asks what is a modern epic and answers in ten chapters: its hero may be an architect facing a city, an artist before a painting or an ordinary person in a fast-changing world, and its pages join architecture, art, faith, philosophy and surrealism.

The EPICS cover: a cracked classical head, a golden arch over a staircase, towers and an open book, with streams of paint running below

The Beginning

Contemporary Epics was not born merely from a desire to create a new collection of books.

It did not begin with a commercial question about what the market wants.

It began with a larger cultural question.

What happened to the written word in an age of speed?

What happened to the book when the screen became humanity’s constant companion?

Can the epic return without imitating the past?

From here, the story began.

Chapter One: The Question Before the Project

Every meaningful project begins with a question.

Our question concerned the destiny of literature itself.

The world no longer reads in the same way.

Time has accelerated.

The image has become more dominant.

Information has become available in an instant.

Yet an abundance of information has not meant an abundance of meaning.

Here we saw the need to return to a literary form capable of carrying great questions.

The epic became the answer.

But not as it once was.

As it could become today.

Chapter Two: Why the Epic?

Because the epic was never merely a long story.

It was a vessel for human memory.

It carried cities, wars, migrations, and dreams.

It carried questions of good and evil.

Power and justice.

Love and death.

Humanity and destiny.

Yet the hero of the epic has changed.

He is no longer necessarily a king or warrior.

He may be an architect facing a city.

An artist before a painting.

A thinker before a question.

Or an ordinary person facing a rapidly changing world.

That is why we needed the Contemporary Epic.

Chapter Three: Redefining Literature

We do not want literature to live within narrow boundaries.

Life itself does not recognize such boundaries.

Humanity does not experience philosophy separately from politics.

Nor religion separately from ethics.

Nor architecture separately from society.

Nor art separately from memory.

That is why disciplines intersect within our epics.

History enters literature.

Architecture enters philosophy.

Art enters memory.

Spiritual questions enter human experience.

From this convergence, a different form of writing emerges.

Chapter Four: When Architecture Became Language

Architecture held an essential place in the birth of the project.

Because architecture is not merely walls.

A building carries an idea.

A city carries memory.

A door carries a decision.

A window defines our relationship with the world outside.

From here, architecture became something that could be read.

The building became a text.

The city became a book.

The architect became one of civilization’s storytellers.

Thus the Architectural Epics were born.

Chapter Five: When Art Entered the Story

Then came the painting.

But we did not want merely to describe it.

We wanted to enter it.

What did the artist see?

What did the artist fear?

What was the artist trying to say?

Why did the work remain after the artist was gone?

From here, the painting became a story.

Color became memory.

Shadow became a question.

Beauty became a stance.

Thus the Artistic Epics were born.

Chapter Six: Faith, Philosophy, and the Question

Some questions are older than cities.

Who are we?

Why are we here?

What is good?

What is justice?

What is truth?

And what is humanity’s relationship with its Creator?

That is why philosophy and religion entered the project.

Not as intellectual decoration.

But because they stand at the heart of human experience.

In philosophy, we search for the question.

In faith, we approach meaning, responsibility, and ethics with respect.

Here writing becomes a journey into the human being.

Chapter Seven: Surrealism as a Language of Reality

Why surrealism?

Because reality itself has sometimes become stranger than imagination.

We live between physical and digital worlds.

Between memory and image.

Between the city and the screen.

Between what we see and what we feel.

Surrealism therefore became a means of reconstructing reality.

A staircase may rise from a book.

A clock may become a city.

A face may transform into architecture.

The purpose is not to escape truth.

It is to see it from another angle.

Chapter Eight: The Book as a Complete Work

At EPICS, the work does not end when the text is written.

The cover is part of the epic.

Typography is part of it.

The image is part of it.

The space between words is part of it.

We want the book to begin before the first page.

To begin the moment the reader sees it.

Then move from the eye to the mind.

From the mind to memory.

That is why we present the works in digital and print formats.

But the goal remains one.

To make the book a complete experience.

Chapter Nine: Technology Without Losing the Human

EPICS was born in an age of new digital tools.

A contemporary project cannot ignore its own age.

Technology is not the author.

Nor is it the idea.

Nor the conscience.

It is a tool.

It can be used to expand imagination.

To construct new visual worlds.

To explore different forms of storytelling and design.

But the human being remains at the center.

Because the human asks.

The human chooses.

And the human bears responsibility for meaning.

Chapter Ten: The Birth of the Contemporary Epic

And so EPICS was not born in a single moment.

It was born from accumulated questions.

From architecture.

From art.

From literature.

From history.

From philosophy.

From faith.

From the experience of contemporary humanity itself.

It was born from the desire that the word not become merely another thing we scroll past.

And from the belief that a book can still carry an entire world.

We are not here to reproduce the past.

We are here to continue what humanity began with its first story.

To preserve its experience.

To question.

To remember.

And to leave something behind.

This is the birth of Contemporary Epics.

Not the birth of a closed literary genre.

But the birth of an open space.

A space where the word meets the image.

Architecture meets philosophy.

Art meets history.

Faith meets questioning.

The past meets the future.

And at the center of it all stands the human being.

The Ending

EPICS was not born to add more words to a world already overflowing with words.

It was born to restore weight to the word.

Meaning to the image.

Presence to the book.

And to the reader, a place as a partner in the experience.

The epic did not die.

It waited for a new age to be born again.

The Story of Contemporary Epics tells the same beginning as an introduction to the project. The manifesto is the book Contemporary Epics: A Manifesto, Epics, and a Contemporary Human Experience, and the about page introduces 3DEPICS and Imad.
