The Story of Contemporary Epics: About 3DEPICS

How 3DEPICS began with one question, whether the epic can still live today, and who the hero of an epic is now.

Imad's EPICS cover: an open book, a quill and a classical head before a city of domes and towers, for an essay on the epic in 21st century literature

3DEPICS publishes contemporary epics, bilingual ebooks in Arabic and English by the New York architect Imad Darouich on architecture, cities, art, faith and philosophy. The Story of Contemporary Epics is Imad's account of the project and his case for the epic in 21st century literature: a hero who carries no sword and fights time, identity, technology and doubt, in books meant to be read slowly.

EPICS cover: golden letters wrapped in a red ribbon above a classical face, a tree, a waterfall pouring from an open book and a melting clock

The Beginning

We did not begin with the idea of creating a traditional publishing house.

We began with a larger question.

Can the epic still live in the twenty-first century?

Can the long-form word survive in an age of speed?

Can the book coexist with the screen without becoming one?

From these questions, Contemporary Epics began.

Chapter One: Why We Returned to the Epic

The epic is among humanity’s oldest attempts to resist oblivion.

Through it, humanity preserved heroism, defeat, love, war, and journey.

But we do not seek to rewrite ancient epics.

Nor do we seek to imitate the voices of the past.

We want to ask a different question.

What is the epic of humanity today?

Its hero may carry no sword.

He may cross no unknown seas.

Yet he lives through battles of another kind.

With time.

With identity.

With power.

With technology.

With faith and doubt.

And with the hardest question: How does one remain human?

From here, the epic returned.

But it returned in a new language.

Chapter Two: The Word That Refused to Become Fleeting

We live in an age of rapid words.

A sentence appears and disappears.

An image is born and buried beneath a thousand others.

A story fills the world in the morning,

ثم يكاد يُنسى مساءً.then is nearly forgotten by evening.

Amid this flow, we wanted to stop.

Not in rejection of the age,

بل دفاعًا عن المعنى.but in defense of meaning.

We believe some words require time.

Some ideas require silence.

Some questions should not be shortened.

That is why we write epics.

To restore humanity’s right to slow reading.

And the idea’s right to become complete.

Chapter Three: When Architecture Met Literature

For us, architecture is not merely the background of a story.

It is one of its characters.

The wall remembers.

The window watches.

The door separates one world from another.

The city carries the biographies of millions.

That is why architecture entered our epics.

We write about a building as we write about a human being.

We ask why it was born.

Who built it.

What dream stood behind it.

How time transformed it.

Architecture is embodied memory.

When stones speak, the architectural epic begins.

Chapter Four: Art That Stepped Out of the Frame

We do not write about a painting merely to describe its colors.

We search for what happened behind the color.

For the human being who held the brush.

His fear.

His love.

His age.

And what he could say only through painting.

From here, the Artistic Epics were born.

Art within them is not decoration.

It is a spiritual document.

Sometimes it is a scream.

Sometimes a prayer.

Sometimes a mirror in which we do not wish to see ourselves.

Chapter Five: Faith and the Search for Meaning

Among humanity’s deepest stories is its relationship with the sacred.

That is why religion and the prophets hold an essential place in our project.

We approach these subjects with respect.

And with awareness of the responsibility of words.

We write about the prophets, peace be upon them,

وعن الرسالات،about revelation,

والعدل،justice,

والرحمة،mercy,

والتوبة،repentance,

والصبر،patience,

وعلاقة الإنسان بخالقه.and humanity’s relationship with its Creator.

We do not seek to turn the sacred into spectacle.

We seek its effect upon the human being.

Because faith has always been one of the great questions of the human story.

Chapter Six: When Philosophy Becomes Story

Philosophy is not a collection of difficult names.

It is a set of questions we live every day.

What is truth?

What is good?

What is freedom?

What is justice?

What can we know?

Who are we when our certainties collapse?

In our epics, we want philosophy to leave the shelves.

To walk in the street.

To enter the home.

To sit beside the reader.

We write about Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Kant, and others,

لكننا لا نبحث عن تماثيل فكرية.but we do not seek intellectual statues.

We seek the living question within their thought.

Chapter Seven: History Is Not the Past

History does not live only behind us.

It lives within our present.

In national borders.

In street names.

In memory.

In fear.

In the dreams we inherited.

That is why we write history as a human story.

We do not stop with kings and leaders.

We search for the people who lived beneath great decisions.

Those who built cities.

Those who lost them.

Those who migrated from them.

Those who carried them in memory.

For us, history is not a calendar.

It is memory in motion.

Chapter Eight: The Human at the Center of the Epic

However our subjects change, the human being remains at the center.

Not the perfect human.

But the real one.

Who makes mistakes.

Who fears.

Who loves.

Who loses.

Who migrates.

Who builds again.

The human of the modern city,

المحاط بالشاشات،surrounded by screens,

This human may seem far from the heroes of ancient epics.

Yet he carries his own battle.

That is why we write about him.

Because the Contemporary Epic begins with the contemporary human.

Chapter Nine: Image, Technology, and the New Book

We are children of a visual age.

That is why we do not separate the word from the image.

We use design,

3D modeling,

والأدوات الرقمية،digital tools,

والتقنيات المعاصرة،contemporary technologies,

لبناء تجربة تتجاوز الصفحة التقليدية.to build an experience beyond the traditional page.

But technology, for us, is a tool.

It is not the goal.

A tool can produce a thousand images.

Vision decides which image deserves to remain.

It can help shape the world.

But the human being gives it meaning.

That is why we want the contemporary book to be literary, artistic, and visual at once.

A book to be read.

To be seen.

To be touched.

And to be kept.

Chapter Ten: Who Are We Today?

We are not a traditional publishing house.

Nor do we want to become a factory of books.

We are an intellectual and creative space.

A place where literature meets art.

Architecture meets philosophy.

History meets memory.

Faith meets questioning.

Technology meets human imagination.

We want to restore the epic to its place.

Not as an ancient literary relic.

But as a form capable of reading our present.

We want to awaken curiosity.

To provoke thought.

To protect the reader’s right to question.

To restore beauty to the book.

We believe the word is still capable of change.

We believe the book has not died.

We believe humanity still needs story.

And we believe the epic has not ended.

Its hero has changed.

Its world has changed.

Its tools have changed.

But our need for it remains.

The Ending

This is our story.

This is our vision.

We write because some ideas deserve more than a fleeting post.

We design because beauty is part of meaning.

We return to history to understand the present.

We turn to art to see what words alone cannot say.

We open the doors of philosophy because questioning is the beginning of awareness.

And we write about humanity because it is the beginning and end of every story.

We are not rewriting the ancient epic.

We are writing the epic of our age.

The epic has not ended…

Its language has changed.

The Birth of Epics tells the same beginning chapter by chapter, and the book Contemporary Epics: A Manifesto, Epics, and a Contemporary Human Experience sets out the manifesto in full. The about page introduces 3DEPICS and Imad, and every epic is in the library.
