The Labyrinth That Wore a Whistle: A Poem About Egypt vs Argentina
Imad watches Egypt play Argentina on a pitch that becomes a labyrinth, where the whistle's shadow covers the whole field.

Imad wrote this poem about Egypt vs Argentina, a match he saw as a labyrinth without a sky rather than a stadium. Egypt runs toward a goal that keeps moving away, the white lines mark the limits of speech, a small whistle casts its shadow over the field and Justice walks out wrapped in fog, leaving the crowd to ask whether the world lost something more than a match.
We did not enter a stadium.
We entered a labyrinth without a sky.
The gate stood open for all.
But leaving
Required another door.
The grass was not green.
It was pages of an ancient court.
Every step upon it
Required a silent signature.
The players searched for a ball.
They found a rolling question.
Whoever touched it
Became a witness against himself.
Someone asked:
Who is our opponent today?
The walls replied:
Not the one before you.
But the labyrinth itself.
Egypt ran toward the goal.
Only to discover the ground
Moved farther with every step.
The other side advanced.
And found the road
Shortened itself in welcome.
The ball knew the truth.
But truth
Walked in chains.
Whenever the ball neared,
Truth retreated farther away.
As for the white lines,
They were not field markings.
They marked the limits of speech.
And the borders of silence.
The whistle was small.
Yet its shadow
Covered the entire field.
It announced no beginning.
It announced no ending.
It merely proclaimed
That the file was closed.
Before it was opened.
Inside the sealed room,
There were no screens.
There were only mirrors.
Every mirror
Reflected a different truth.
Then swallowed the other truth
With icy calm.
The screens watched no match.
The match itself
Was watching the screens.
Trying to understand
How glass could see.
The goal seemed close.
Yet distance
Kept lying endlessly.
And time
Walked backward.
Whenever truth advanced.
I saw Justice
Enter dressed in white.
Then she emerged
Clothed in fog.
I asked her:
Who stole your eyes?
She answered:
No one stole them.
They simply grew tired
Of waiting.
Even the shadows
Refused to move.
They feared
Being called to testify.
The grass itself
Remembered every footprint.
Yet it could not
Speak.
Every minute
Gave birth to another labyrinth.
Every labyrinth
Produced another locked door.
Every door
Created another waiting.
The players departed.
Leaving behind their sweat.
Only the questions remained.
Sitting alone
At the center of the field.
The crowd did not weep
Because a match was lost.
It wept
بكى
Because it witnessed
A dream
Walking toward the scaffold
Without resistance.
There are defeats
Forged by an opponent.
There are defeats
Forged by time.
But the deadliest defeats
Are those
That make a human being
Doubt
The meaning of justice.
When the lights went out,
Truth did not leave.
It remained
Searching for a door.
Every door
Carried a name.
Except the door of justice.
At the end of the night,
Nothing remained
Except one question.
It was heavier
Than any trophy,
Greater
Than the match,
And longer-lived
Than every championship:
Did we lose a match…
Or did the world lose something
It should never lose?
