The Earth Has a Memory That Rises: Mimar Sinan and Peter Zumthor

Sinan lifts the eye with a dome, Zumthor speaks to the hand through stone and wood, and Imad asks for buildings that do both and age well.

Cover of The Earth Has a Memory That Rises, pairing Mimar Sinan architecture with Peter Zumthor's: their portraits above a domed stone hall, a pool between grey stone walls and an open sketchbook

Mimar Sinan (about 1490 to 1588) was the chief Ottoman architect, builder of the great domed mosques of Istanbul and Edirne, and Peter Zumthor, born in Basel in 1943, is the Swiss architect of Therme Vals who won the 2009 Pritzker Prize. Imad's poem reads Mimar Sinan architecture through its domes and load paths, then Zumthor's stone, wood and water, and asks for both scales in one building.

A literary vision inspired by the architecture of Sinan and Peter Zumthor; its imagery and interpretations belong to the writer and are not quotations attributed to them.

The Introduction

I am Imad Darouich.

I place a stone on the ground and imagine the journey it traveled before reaching my hand.

It was in the mountain.

Then it became a wall.

Tomorrow, a person may lean against it to gather strength.

Between these states lies architecture’s responsibility.

The Epic

With Sinan, the dome rises, and the field of vision beneath it expands.

An arch reaches toward another arch.

Loads travel until they reach the earth through bodies of stone.

I read that passage with my eyes.

And feel it in the way I stand.

Above me rests an immense weight.

Around me is a space that allows a breath to lengthen.

That is the wonder of a building when it masters its burden.

To grant a person peace beneath what they know is heavy.

Light enters through the windows.

It moves across the stone, leaving the day’s trace within the place.

I think of prayer.

Of a body bowing, with architecture having made room for it.

Of a forehead touching the ground while that entire expanse rises above it.

Then I draw near to Zumthor.

The image grows quieter.

And the material begins to make its presence felt.

Stone beneath the foot.

Wood beneath the palm.

And water changing the air’s temperature.

I know the place through my body before I find the words.

I walk, and the sound of my step returns differently.

I touch the wall, and its coolness comes before its description.

Here, details become a complete architecture.

The edge that does not hurt the hand.

The threshold that announces a passage without obstructing it.

The light that gives the eye time to adjust.

Between Sinan’s vastness and Zumthor’s density, I see two scales meeting in the human being.

A dome lifting the gaze.

And a handle settling into the hand.

If I neglect either, something remains missing from the building.

I may build an astonishing roof and leave its entrance harsh.

I may perfect a joint and fail to give the room its spirit.

So I return to the material.

I ask what it will do when it touches life.

How will this stone age?

Where will the traces of hands appear upon the wood?

Will the years give the place depth?

Or reveal what we tried to conceal on opening day?

I want architecture capable of welcoming time.

With room for traces.

And care that keeps those traces alive.

The Ending

O Lord, give what we build strength that protects, beauty that is gentle, and a life that serves.

Through Sinan, I contemplate how mass is raised so people may find space beneath it.

Through Zumthor, I contemplate how material is shaped so a person may feel present.

Then I set a stone in its place.

I check its load.

And run my hand across its surface.

I think of a hand that will come years after mine.

It will not know my name.

But through touch, it will know how much care I left behind.

Sinan's two great domes have pieces of their own, A Dome Bears a Name, the Ground Bears Everyone and The Dome That Summoned Its Architect to Trial. Zumthor's Los Angeles galleries are read in The Museum That Crossed the Street, and his life in Peter Zumthor: The Epic of Material, Memory, and Silence.
