Imad wrote this fable about time, in which he wakes one morning to the news that Time has resigned. Clocks stop and calendars freeze, people keep running to work without knowing where, markets weep, and a letter signed by Time explains that it left because humans turned it into a prison and never asked where they were running.

I am Imad Darouich.

On a morning whose date I cannot remember.

I woke to a strange announcement.

No government had fallen.

No war had erupted.

No creature had descended from the heavens.

Time had resigned.

At first people laughed.

They said it was another rumor.

But the clocks stopped.

The calendars froze.

And the word "tomorrow" disappeared.

The sun no longer knew when to rise.

Nor did the night know when to end.

New York hung between two minutes.

Damascus was trapped between two breaths.

And the whole world

Waiting for something that would never arrive.

I stepped into the street.

People were still running.

Running toward their jobs.

Running toward their meetings.

Running toward their dreams.

I asked one of them:

Where are you going?

He replied:

I do not know.

But I am late.

I laughed.

For lateness no longer existed.

And in the evening

I saw stock markets weeping.

And banks trembling.

And politicians

Arguing with the hands of clocks.

But Time did not return.

After many long days

A letter arrived to Earth.

It bore a single signature.

Time"

It read:

I worked for you for thousands of years."

I gave you the seasons."

I gave you lifetimes."

I gave you opportunities."

But you turned me into a prison."

You made children run."

And the elderly run."

And cities run."

And civilizations run."

You run faster every year."

But never ask where."

So I chose to leave."

Only then

Did silence finally descend.

For the first time in centuries

Humanity sat with itself.

A father looked at his children.

A son looked at the sky.

A merchant looked into his heart.

And everyone discovered

That they had always possessed time.

But they had not possessed life.

At the end of the hallucination

I saw Time sitting alone

At the edge of the universe.

I asked him:

Will you return?

He smiled.

And said:

I will return

When you learn the difference

Between measuring life

And living life.
