The Epic of the Last Architect
When software designs a perfect city in seconds, Imad fears less for the architect's job than for the architect's memory of why we build.

Imad wrote this poem on AI in architecture after watching software generate an entire city in seconds, with Ottoman domes, Japanese façades and curved towers. He sets that perfection against Old Aleppo, the alleys of Fez and the domes of Mimar Sinan, and concludes that the machine can design faster but cannot understand a person's need for shade, safety and calm.
In the age of artificial intelligence…
The question is no longer:
Can the machine design?
بل:But rather:
Does humanity still remember why it once built?
One night I sat alone
Watching the screen before me.
Software generated entire cities
Within mere seconds.
Ottoman domes.
Japanese facades.
Curved towers in the style of Zaha Hadid
Emerging from nothingness
Like digital sea creatures.
I pressed only one button.
And the machine gave birth
To an entire city.
Streets.
Artificial rivers.
Libraries.
Skyscrapers.
Even the shadows of trees.
Everything was perfect.
And there I became afraid.
Not of artificial intelligence.
But of the human who would believe in this perfection.
Suddenly I remembered
How ancient architects
Built cities with a slowness resembling prayer.
In Old Aleppo
Stone knew
The name of the craftsman who carved it.
And in Fez
The narrow alleys
Understood the movement of the sun better than many engineers today.
As for Istanbul
فإنMimar Sinan
As though he were trying
To lighten the weight of the sky upon humanity.
The man was not merely drawing a building.
He was drawing humanity’s relationship with God.
But today…
Many architects
Draw their buildings
Like influencers compose Instagram
photos.
Everything must be publishable.
Sellable.
Capable of nighttime illumination.
Even mosques sometimes
Look like luxury showrooms.
And in Dubai
I sometimes felt
That towers no longer house humans.
Rather, humans dwell inside towers
Like electronic files stored in the cloud.
Massive glass facades.
Lobbies resembling airports.
And indoor trees
Dying silently beneath central air conditioning.
And in New York City
I saw people
Ascending daily
Inside thousands of illuminated windows.
Yet I did not see a single home
Resembling my grandmother’s home in Damascus.
هناكThere
Light entered modestly.
And the trees
Guarded the home’s inner silence.
But here
The city never sleeps.
Because it fears silence.
And that night
I suddenly closed the computer.
And felt the screen
Looking at me mockingly.
As if artificial intelligence were asking me:
If I can
Design faster than you…
Draw more beautifully than you…
And generate a thousand ideas in one minute…
Then what remains for you, architect?
At that moment
I finally understood the answer.
The true architect
Is not the one who merely draws forms.
But the one who understands humanity.
Understands his fear of darkness.
His need for shade.
And his ancient desire
To feel safe within a wall.
The machine may build an entire city.
But it does not know
How to build serenity.
Nor how to make light
Enter a home
The way a mother enters
Her sleeping child’s room.
And since that night
I no longer fear
Artificial intelligence taking the architect’s job.
Rather, I fear
That architects themselves may forget
That once upon a time
He was a poet building with stone.
More epics on this subject are in the library's Ideas & Philosophy collection, and more essays in the journal's Ideas & Philosophy section.
