The Garden That Summoned Its Residents
In a small garden between apartment blocks, a chair asks Imad to leave it empty because someone might come, and someone finally does.
By Architect Imad DarouichUpdated 5 min read

Imad wrote this story about a shared garden between apartment buildings, an imagined tale inspired by photographs of a table, two chairs and white benches that nobody used. A chair asks him to leave it empty in case someone comes, a bench sets off upstairs in search of people, and a neighbor who has lived there two years finally sits down with her coffee.
A Note
An imagined story inspired by the photographs, about architecture that prepares a place for people to meet, then waits for someone to come.
البدايةThe Beginning
I entered the little garden between the buildings.
Behind me, the city’s noise.
Before me, a table and two chairs.
White benches curved as though stone had learned tenderness.
Broad leaves held the light along their weary edges.
I looked up.
Balconies above balconies.
Each apartment had its portion of sky.
And I saw no one.
The Epic
I sat at the table.
I pulled the opposite chair closer to set down my bag.
Then I heard it say, “Leave it empty.”
I looked around.
Someone might come,” it said.
I smiled and placed the bag at my feet.
“How long have you been waiting?” I asked.
Since construction was finished.”
A breeze passed between us.
It stirred the leaves and found no clothing to stir.
The place is beautiful,” I said.
I know,” the chair replied. “They say that whenever they take a photograph.”
Then they go upstairs.
Above us, a window lit up.
Then another. Then a third.
The building looked like a great cabinet, with an entire life stored in each drawer.
Perhaps they’re busy,” I said.
And I was made so they could rest.”
I did not know how to answer.
I too had drawn gardens on paper.
I had placed the trees where they belonged.
Calculated the shade. Chosen the benches.
And at handover, I had written: “Project complete.”
Now a chair before me was asking about the rest of the project.
Suddenly, the white bench beside the wall moved.
Slowly, heavily, it advanced toward the entrance.
“Where are you going?”
I’m going up to them.”
A little branch bent beneath its weight.
The table trembled.
And I stepped back.
It was a funny sight, until I thought about why it was leaving.
A bench going in search of a person.
It reached the glass door.
On the door was a notice: “Garden furniture must not be moved.”
It stopped.
“Is loneliness allowed to be brought outside?” it asked.
At that moment, the door opened.
A woman came out carrying a cup.
She saw me standing before the bench.
“Are you waiting for someone?” she asked.
I looked at the empty chair.
It seems we all are,” I said.
She sat down.
The bench returned to its place without her noticing.
I’ve lived here for two years,” she said. “This is the first time I’ve sat out here.”
Then she pointed to a high window.
Her apartment was up there.
And in her apartment was another table.
And another empty chair.
I did not ask who used to sit in it.
I gave her time.
And after a while, she began to speak.
About a man who put too much sugar in his coffee.
And left his book open, as though he would return in a minute.
She spoke, rubbing the rim of her cup with her thumb.
And I listened.
Above us, a man appeared on his balcony.
“Is it nice down there?” he asked.
Come down and see for yourself,” the woman said.
Minutes later, the table had three voices.
Then a child passed and asked whether he could sit with us.
We pulled up a chair for him.
This time, the furniture did not speak.
It was busy doing its work.
The Ending
When I left, the woman was still telling her story.
The man was listening. The child was rocking in his chair.
The building’s height had not changed.
We had added no window.
But a woman no longer had to finish her coffee alone.
I looked back at the garden one last time.
And silently, like an architect correcting his report, I said:
Today, the project was completed.
