Epics: The Contemporary Epic
Imad argues that the epic never died: it stopped searching for kings and started searching for the human being.

Imad wrote this short poem about the contemporary epic, the form at the heart of his library. The old hero carried a sword and crossed deserts; the new one carries a question and crosses himself, while the labyrinth moves from castles into the mind, and architecture, stone, light and silence become the language of the epic.
The epic never died.
It merely changed its form.
Once, it searched for kings.
Today, it searches for humanity.
The hero once carried a sword.
Now, he carries a question.
He once crossed deserts.
Today, he crosses himself.
Castles are no longer the labyrinth.
The mind has become the labyrinth.
The monsters no longer live outside the walls.
They dwell within fear.
Every city is a courtroom.
Every street is a witness.
Every window watches us.
Yet no one knows the accusation.
In the contemporary epic,
Architecture becomes poetry.
Stone becomes memory.
Light becomes philosophy.
Silence becomes language.
We no longer write history.
We write what hides behind it.
Truth never shouts.
It only whispers.
Every painting is an epic.
Every building is a confession.
Every road is an autobiography.
Every human is an unwritten book.
We do not seek endings.
We seek meaning.
We do not seek heroes.
We seek those who remained human.
Perhaps Imad was right.
The road is longer than the traveler.
The question is greater than the answer.
The human soul is deeper than its history.
These are not books.
They are mirrors.
Whoever opens them,
May discover themselves for the first time.
Where philosophy becomes art.
Where art becomes architecture.
Where architecture becomes memory.
And memory becomes an epic.
More epics on this subject are in the library's Ideas & Philosophy collection, and more essays in the journal's Ideas & Philosophy section.
