Imad wrote this prose poem about the Barada river, which rises at Ain al-Fijeh and once divided into canals and streams to reach every tree, house and child of Eastern Ghouta. He follows how its water was slowly diverted from orchards to a growing city and its concrete, and argues that a river is a balance between people and nature, broken when we stop understanding it.

On the other side of the story…

Where the river still breathes…

وإن كان بصعوبة…even if with difficulty…

Barada was…

From Ain al-Fijeh…

خرجت الحكاية الأولى…the first story emerged…

Pure water…

كأنه لم يمرّ بالعالم بعد…as if untouched by the world…

Then began the journey…

ليس نحو البحر…not toward the sea…

بل نحو الحياة…but toward life…

Damascus was not built by stone alone…

بل بقطراتٍ من بردى…but by drops of Barada…

And Eastern Ghouta…

لم تكن بساتين فقط…was not merely orchards…

بل كانت وعداً أخضر…but a green promise…

كتبه الماء على الأرض…written by water upon earth…

There…

حيث تمتد الأشجار كصلواتٍ صامتة…where trees stretch like silent prayers…

Barada would divide…

لا ليضعف…not to weaken…

بل ليصل…but to reach…

To every tree…

إلى كل طفلٍ لم يعرف اسمه…to every child who never knew his name…

Yet he knew them all…

He was not one river…

بل شبكة حياة…but a network of life…

Every canal was a message…

Every stream was a promise…

He told the land:

خذي…Take…

وازرعي…and grow…

ولا تخافي…and do not fear…

And the land believed…

But…

كما في الديراني…as with Derani…

The catastrophe did not arrive at once…

It came…

خطوة…step… by step…

The water began to shrink…

لا لأنه انتهى…not because it ended…

بل لأنه حُوّل…but because it was diverted…

Priorities shifted…

من شجرةٍ تحتاج ماء…from a tree needing water…

إلى مدينةٍ تحتاج توسّع…to a city demanding expansion…

من بستانٍ ينتظر الربيع…from an orchard awaiting spring…

إلى إسمنتٍ لا ينتظر أحداً…to concrete that waits for no one…

And in between…

The river was lost…

He did not disappear…

بل تغيّر…he transformed…

Sometimes a pipe…

وأحياناً قناةً صامتة…sometimes a silent channel…

وأحياناً مجرد ذكرى…and sometimes just a memory…

Eastern Ghouta…

What an irony…

The place that once gave life…

صار يطلبها…now begs for it…

But the truth…

أعمق من ذلك…is deeper than that…

Barada did not grow tired…

But we…

لم نفهمه…did not understand him…

We failed to see that a river…

ليس خطاً أزرق على خريطة…is not a blue line on a map…

بل توازن…but a balance…

بين السماء والأرض…between sky and earth…

بين الإنسان والطبيعة…between man and nature…

And when this balance breaks…

The river does not scream…

بل يصمت…it falls silent…

And its silence…

هو أخطر من الجفاف…is more dangerous than drought…

Barada…

لم يكن مجرد نهر…was never just a river…

It was a system of life…

And when we broke that system…

لم نجفف الماء فقط…we did not just dry the water…

بل جففنا معنى الحياة نفسها…we dried the meaning of life itself…
