Two Cities Inside Me: New York and Damascus in an Exile's Mind
New York builds the sky and Damascus guards the earth, and the heart knows which of the two is home.

This poem about New York and Damascus sets the two cities against each other inside one exile's head. New York teaches order, time and survival, with streets straight as equations and glass that reflects nothing in the soul, while Damascus taught meaning, its stone holding the warmth of centuries. Imad calls one the architecture of speed and the other the architecture of meaning.
Two Cities Fighting Inside My Head.
I live in New York, but I do not inhabit it.
Its skyscrapers pass beside me like trees without memory.
But Damascus, I do not live in it…
It is the one that lives inside me.
In New York, I learn order, time, and
survival.
In Damascus, I learned
meaning… even when it was broken.
Here I walk fast to arrive,
There, I walked slowly to understand.
I am a body in a city,
And a soul in a homeland that never left
me.
In New York the streets are straight like equations,
لكن القلب لا يعرف الحساب.but the heart does not know arithmetic.
Everything here is measured by the minute,
حتى الأحلام تسير وفق جدول المترو.even dreams run on the subway timetable.
But Damascus,
فلم تكن مدينةً فقط،was never merely a city,
كانت ذاكرةً تمشي على حجارةٍ قديمة.it was memory walking on ancient
stones.
I knew the road before walking it,
لأن الياسمين كان يرشدني.because the jasmine guided me.
In New York I see the future,
وفي دمشق أسمع التاريخ يتنفس.in Damascus I hear history breathing.
Here glass shines like a cold idea,
وهناك الحجر يحتفظ بحرارة القرون.there stone preserves the warmth of
centuries.
Two cities fight inside my head,
إحداهما تبني السماء،one builds the sky,
والأخرى تحفظ الأرض.the other guards the earth.
One teaches me how to live,
والأخرى تعلمني لماذا أعيش.the other teaches me why I live.
At night,
حين تهدأ ضوضاء نيويورك،when New York’s noise quiets,
Damascus rises inside me like a city
of light.
I see it as it once was,
وكما ستبقى،and as it will remain,
مدينةً لا تهزمها المسافات.a city distance cannot defeat.
For a homeland is not merely a place,
إنه معمارٌ يسكن الروح.it is an architecture inhabiting the soul.
And that is why,
كلما ابتعدتُ عنها أكثر،the farther I move away from it,
اقتربتُ منها أكثر.the closer I come to it.
Damascus is not behind me,
إنها في داخلي.it is within me.
And for this reason,
مدينتان تتقاتلان داخل رأسي،two cities fight inside my head,
لكن قلبي يعرف جيدًاbut my heart knows well
أيّهما هي الوطن.which one is home.
Two Cities Fighting Inside My Head.
I live in New York, but I do not inhabit
it.
Its skyscrapers pass beside me like trees without memory.
But Damascus, I do not live in it…
It is the one that lives inside me.
In New York, I learn order, time, and survival.
In Damascus, I learned meaning… even when it was broken.
Here I walk fast to arrive,
There, I walked slowly to understand.
I am a body in a city,
And a soul in a homeland that never left me.
In New York the streets are straight like geometric equations,
مرسومة بمسطرة الاقتصاد وقلم السلطة.drawn by the ruler of capital and the pen of power.
Every angle calculated,
كل برج نتيجة معادلة بين الأرض والسوق.every tower the result of an equation between land and market.
But the heart does not know arithmetic.
The soul is not measured in square
meters,
ولا تُبنى بالخرسانة المسلحة.nor built with reinforced concrete.
But Damascus,
فلم تكن مدينة فقط،was never merely a city,
كانت طبقات من الزمن،it was layers of time,
كأنها مخطوط معماري كتبته القرون.like an architectural manuscript written by centuries.
In its narrow alleys
كان الظل مهندسًا خفيًا،shadow was the silent architect,
والنور ضيفًا يعرف كيف يدخل من ثقوب الحجر.and light a guest that knew how to enter through stone.
In New York I see architecture as will,
قرارًا يرتفع نحو السماء.a decision rising toward the sky.
In Damascus I saw it as memory,
جدارًا يحمل صدى الذين مرّوا قبلي.a wall carrying the echoes of those who came before me.
Here glass reflects the city,
لكن لا شيء ينعكس في الروح.yet nothing reflects in the soul.
There stone absorbs time,
حتى يصبح التاريخ مادة بناء.until history becomes a building material.
Two cities fight inside my head,
إحداهما عمارة السرعة،one the architecture of speed,
والأخرى عمارة المعنى.the other the architecture of meaning.
One builds the future,
والأخرى تحرس الماضي.the other guards the past.
One raises towers,
والأخرى تزرع الذاكرة في الجدران.the other plants memory in the walls.
At night,
حين تهدأ ضوضاء نيويورك،when New York’s noise grows quiet,
تبدأ مدينة أخرى بالظهور.another city begins to appear.
Not on any map,
بل في أعماق الروح.but in the depths of the soul.
Damascus.
It returns like an ancient idea
رفضت أن تموت.that refused to die.
I see it as it was,
مدينة لا تُقاس بمساحتها،a city not measured by its size,
بل بعمقها في القلب.but by its depth in the heart.
For a homeland is not merely a place,
إنه معمار داخلي،it is an inner architecture,
تظلّل الروح أينما ذهبت.that shelters the soul wherever it goes.
And that is why,
كلما ابتعدت عنها أكثر،the farther I move away from it,
اقتربت منها أكثر.the closer I come to it.
Damascus is not behind me,
ولا أمامي،nor ahead of me,
بل في داخلي.but within me.
Two cities fight inside my head,
لكن العمارة الحقيقيةbut the true architecture
ليست تلك التي تُبنى بالحجر،is not built of stone,
بل تلك التي تُبنى في القلب.but the one built in the heart.
And so I know,
لكن المدينة التي تسكن الروحbut the city that inhabits the soul
لا تهدمها الحروبcannot be demolished by wars
ولا تمحوها المسافات.nor erased by distance.
