The Epic of the New Hanging Poems
The Arabs once hung their best odes on the Kaaba; Imad asks how a word can endure when poems now hang on glowing screens.

Imad wrote this short poem on the Mu'allaqat in the digital age. The Arabs once hung their great odes on the walls of the Kaaba, where poetry was the scale of the tribes; today thousands of voices hang their words on glowing screens and hear the hum of servers instead of horses, and the old question remains of how to make a word endure.
The Arabs once hung their poems upon the walls of the Kaaba,
As if words were stars searching for an eternal sky.
There, in the heart of the desert,
Poetry was the scale of tribes and the mirror of the soul.
But time no longer hangs poems upon stone,
It suspends them in an invisible sky.
Glowing screens have become a new Kaaba for words,
Around them circle eyes instead of pilgrims.
And in this age,
The Mu‘allaqat are no longer only seven,
But thousands of voices seeking digital immortality.
The poets of yesterday heard the thunder of horses,
The poets of today hear the hum of servers.
Yet the question has never changed:
How do we make a word endure?
Perhaps the walls are no longer stone,
But they still wait for a poem.
A poem hung between past and future,
Between the Kaaba… and the blue glow of screens.
And so the Mu‘allaqat are born again,
Not on a single wall,
But upon the walls of the entire world.
