When a Smile Built a Room Time Could Not Enter: Leonardo's Mona Lisa
Time takes Leonardo to court for leaving a face unfinished, and the Mona Lisa's smile becomes the hardest witness to question.

Leonardo da Vinci began the Mona Lisa in Florence around 1503, painting Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, in oil on a poplar panel; he is believed to have kept working on it in France, and it has hung in the Louvre since 1797. Imad's prose poem turns the Mona Lisa sfumato, the soft blending without hard lines, into a trial in which Time accuses Leonardo of never finishing a face.
This story is based on Leonardo da Vinci’s painting known as the Mona Lisa. 1503.Leonardo began working on it in Florence around 1503. The portrait depicts Lisa Gherardini, wife of the Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo. It was painted on a poplar panel using delicate layers of color and the sfumato technique.
Leonardo kept the painting with him before it entered the French royal collection. The trial, dialogue, and scenes presented here are an imaginative literary interpretation exploring his artistic and human world. In Florence, a woman entered the painter’s room. Her name was Lisa Gherardini. She sat before Leonardo. She placed one hand over the other.وقالت:And said:ارسم وجهي.Paint my face. He looked at her for a long time.
But he did not see a face. He saw a closed door. Behind it stood an entire life. I can paint your eyes. But I do not know who is looking through them. I can paint your mouth. But I do not know the word you have hidden inside it. I can paint your hands. But I do not know what they have released.
Lisa remained silent. Within that silence, the painting began. Leonardo placed the poplar panel before him.كان صغيرًا.It was small. Yet it resembled the façade of a building awaiting its inhabitants. He drew the body as a foundation. The hands as a threshold. The shoulders as two walls. The eyes as two windows overlooking different worlds.
The mouth he left as a half-open door. The first day passed. Then the second. Then the years began entering the studio one by one. Leonardo added a layer. Then waited.يضيف ظلًا.He added a shadow. Then dissolved it into another shadow. Edges disappeared. The face no longer ended at the skin.
Air no longer began outside the body. The woman merged with the atmosphere surrounding her. As though she had not been painted upon the panel. But had slowly emerged from within it. I will draw the ending. There is no ending in the human face.
I will separate the woman from the world. A human being is not an island enclosed by borders. Then the haze arrived. It settled between light and shadow. It concealed where one ended and the other began. This is sfumato. It is not smoke laid over the face. It is a passage between two states.
Between appearance and disappearance. Between certainty and doubt. Between what a person reveals and what remains buried within. Behind Lisa, he constructed a landscape belonging to no single place. He drew roads leading to no doors. He painted bridges over unknown waters. He raised mountains that appeared older than humanity. The horizon behind her left shoulder was low. Behind the other, the world rose.
The earth appeared divided. Only the face attempted to hold it together. One night, the painting awakened. It looked at Leonardo. Why have you not finished me? Because you change each time I look at you. I do not change.
You arrive before me as a different man each day. Are you smiling? If you know, the painting will die. In the morning, Leonardo was summoned before the Court of Unfinished Works. He entered the chamber. The walls were covered with his drawings.
Sculptures never completed. Paintings suspended between beginning and end. Time sat upon the judge’s bench. The Mona Lisa stood before it. How many years do you require to finish a single face? How many centuries do you require to understand one? Time struck its gavel.قال:It said:
You are accused of refusing completion.تبدأ كثيرًا.You begin too much.وتنتهي قليلًا.And finish too little. You open doors. Then leave humanity standing before them. I do not leave the work unfinished. I leave within it a place for the future. The court summoned the eyes.
They entered while observing everyone.سألهما الزمن:Time asked them:إلى من تنظران؟Whom are you watching? Everyone who believes they are looking at us. The court summoned the hands. They entered quietly. Why do you not move? They replied:
Because stillness may contain more life than movement. The court then summoned the smile. It did not enter through the door. It slowly appeared upon Lisa’s mouth. Then vanished when they tried to look at it directly.قال الزمن:Time said:اقتربي.Come closer. It came closer. And disappeared again.
Are you joy?قالت:It replied:ربما.Perhaps. Are you sorrow? Perhaps. Are you mocking us? Perhaps you mock yourselves through your need for an answer. Every door must lead to a room.
I am a door leading back to whoever looks at me. If someone approaches me with joy, they find me joyful. If someone approaches me broken, they see sorrow hidden within me. I do not reveal Lisa alone. I reveal the visitor to the self. Silence filled the courtroom. Time looked at the painting. Then at Leonardo.
You have built a labyrinth inside a face. I built a mirror that does not reflect appearances. It reflects the question carried by the human being. Where is the entrance to this architecture? Leonardo pointed toward the eyes. Where is its corridor? He pointed toward the shadows.
Where is its hidden chamber? He pointed toward the smile. Where is its exit? It has no exit. Everyone who enters carries part of it away. The years passed. Leonardo grew old. Cities changed.
Those who had sat before him died. Yet the painting remained with him. He carried it from Italy to France. As though it were not the portrait of a woman. But a window removed from the house of his life. It was a small panel. Yet within it she carried everything he could not finish. The science that never reached its end. The machines that arrived before their age. The body he dissected while searching for the soul.
And the questions that remained greater than his answers. The Mona Lisa said to him:لماذا حملتني كل هذه المسافة؟Why did you carry me all this way? Because I was not painting you alone. I was painting the distance between the human being and the hidden self.قالت:She said:وهل وصلت؟Did you reach it? He looked at his aging hands.قال:
He replied:وصلت إلى الباب.I reached the door. But life did not give me enough time to enter. After his death, the painting entered royal palaces. Then it reached the Louvre. Revolutions passed before it. Thrones changed. Borders shifted. Yet she remained seated. In 1911, she disappeared from the wall.
She was stolen.بقي مكانها فارغًا.Her place remained empty. People came to see the absence. The world then discovered that the painting had built a room inside its memory. Even in absence, she remained present. She returned more than two years later. But she was no longer merely a painting. She had become the most famous question in the history of art. Today, she stands behind glass.
Millions pass before her. They raise their phones. They take a photograph. Then they leave. Yet some remain for one moment longer. They see a woman.ثم يرى منظرًا.Then a landscape. Then a smile. Then they feel that the painting is looking at them. This is the power of art.
To begin with one face. Then become a house inhabited by humanity. For the artist to use light as the architect uses stone. To build with shadow corridors invisible to the eye. To make the face a façade. The eyes two windows. The hands a threshold. And the smile a door that never opens the same way twice. Leonardo’s greatness was not that he knew everything.
It was that he never allowed certainty to close the question. He saw a machine within a muscle. The movement of the world within water. Within a bird’s wing, the possibility of humanity’s future. And within a woman’s face, an entire architecture of the soul. Color may dry. Wood may crack. The painter may die. But a work that preserves a room for mystery does not grow old. Because every generation enters that room for the first time.
At the end of the trial, Time stood before the Mona Lisa.
It stared at her.
It waited for her to change.
But she smiled.
For the first time, Time felt afraid.
It realized that Leonardo had not painted a woman inside his time.
He had built an entire age inside the face of a woman.
Leonardo's stretched drawing of an eye is the subject of When the Page Deceives the Eye, and his wall painting in Milan is read in Leonardo's Last Supper: The Table of Time. More painters fill the literature and art collection.
