Mona Lisa Poem: A Smile Across the Ages

The Mona Lisa speaks for herself: a smile that refuses translation, a road that never arrives, and a viewer who finds himself in her eyes.

This Mona Lisa poem opens with the painting's story: Leonardo da Vinci painted La Gioconda between 1503 and 1506, may have refined it until about 1517, and used sfumato to soften the line between light and shadow. Then the painting speaks for herself from the Louvre, about her half smile, the road behind her and the visitors who see themselves in her eyes.

THE SMILE THAT NEVER FADES

The Mona Lisa, or La Gioconda,

هي أشهر لوحات العالم.is the world’s most famous painting.

Leonardo da Vinci painted her,

1506.between 1503 and 1506.

He may have refined her afterward.

1517.Possibly until around 1517.

Today, she resides in the Louvre.

There, in the heart of Paris.

Behind glass protecting her physical form.

Yet no glass can imprison her mystery.

Millions of eyes pass before her.

Yet her smile never grows old.

Her fame lies beyond beauty alone.

It lives in an endless mystery.

In a smile never fully formed.

And a gaze that seems alive.

Da Vinci mastered the sfumato technique.

Where boundaries dissolve softly.

And light merges into shadow.

Until the face becomes a dream.

And here, the epic begins.

A SMILE THAT NEVER FADES

I am not a face on canvas.

I am a window between two worlds.

Between the unseen and the present.

I am a mystery smiling,

منذ أكثر من خمسة قرون.for more than five centuries.

And still refusing translation.

You who stand before me,

في قاعات متحف اللوفر،inside the halls of the Louvre,

تظن أنني أنظر إليك.you think I am watching you.

But look once more.

Perhaps you are painted in my eyes.

With every step you take,

تسير ابتسامتي معك.my smile seems to follow.

Like a shadow knowing its owner.

Even when you turn away.

They said: an ordinary Italian woman.

But what does ordinary mean?

When touched by an immortal artist?

Can you believe a simple face

could become humanity’s memory?

That half a smile

could defeat five centuries?

Thrones have fallen.

Kings have vanished.

Empires have become pages in books.

Yet she is still smiling.

THE RIDDLE OF HEARTS

I am a smile the mind

I am not merely a scholar’s riddle.

I am also the lovers’ mystery.

And the ancient question of poets.

Was I joy?

Or sorrow?

Was I a promise?

Or a long farewell?

Perhaps I was both.

For a human does not always smile

لأنه سعيد.because they are happy.

Sometimes we smile

لأن الحزن صار عميقًا،because sorrow has grown too deep

حتى عجز عن البكاء.even for tears.

WHAT DA VINCI PAINTED

Within my features, da Vinci painted

أكثر من امرأة.more than a woman.

He painted the patience of mothers.

Humanity’s longing for eternity.

Human fear of time.

And the desire for one moment

ترفض أن تموت.that refuses to die.

Perhaps that is why I remained.

Because I was not painted merely as a woman.

But to carry humanity’s question.

What remains of us?

After we are gone?

THE ROAD THAT NEVER ARRIVES

Behind me lie distant plains.

And mountains swallowed by mist.

And roads winding into distance.

Yet never arriving.

As though da Vinci left them unfinished.

So they could ask every traveler:

Where are you going?

And why are you rushing?

What of you will remain?

When the road finally ends?

Perhaps the road behind me

ليس طريقًا في الطبيعة.is not a road through nature.

Perhaps it is a lifetime.

It bends.

It rises.

It disappears.

Without ever telling us

أين ستكون النهاية.where the ending will be.

I AM LOOKING THROUGH YOU

Do you think I look at you?

Perhaps you are mistaken.

I am looking through you.

Into the emptiness behind your chest.

Toward the child you once were.

Toward the things you lost.

Toward the words you concealed.

Toward a love left unfinished.

Toward a door you closed,

ثم تمنيت فتحه.then wished you had reopened.

Toward a memory

لم تكتبها بعد.you have not yet written.

That is why I unsettle you.

Because the painting is not watching you.

You are looking at yourself.

A FACE BECOMES A MIRROR

My cheeks are merely a bridge.

Travelers cross over it,

نحو حلم لم يولد.toward a dream not yet born.

My mouth is not merely a smile.

It is silent music.

Played by the night

حين يتأمل نفسه.when it contemplates itself.

Everyone who stood before me

ترك شيئًا من نفسه.left something of themselves behind.

And carried something of me away.

And so my face became

مزدحمًا بملايين الوجوه.crowded with millions of faces.

THE MAN WHO SAW HIMSELF

A man once stood before me.

He stared for a long time.

Then he told his friend:

I saw a woman smiling.

But I know the truth.

He did not see me.

He saw himself.

He saw his life passing.

He saw his mother’s face.

He saw a woman he loved.

He saw the things he lost.

Then he saw himself,

يبتسم للحياة،smiling at life,

كأنها المرة الأخيرة.as though for the final time.

THE MERCURY OF THE AGES

I am the mercury of ages.

I change within your gaze.

I become a woman.

A mother.

A lover.

A stranger.

A memory.

A breathing shadow,

على حافة الوهم.upon the edge of illusion.

Everyone who sees me

يصنع موناليزا مختلفة.creates a different Mona Lisa.

That is why the painting never ended.

Perhaps da Vinci stopped painting.

But the viewers

ما زالوا يكملونها.are still completing it.

AM I HAPPY?

Am I happiness?

Perhaps.

Am I a gentle sorrow?

Perhaps.

Do I conceal a farewell?

Perhaps.

But why do you need an answer?

Beauty completely explained

يفقد بعض سحره.loses some of its magic.

I am not an answer.

I am a question.

A question suspended

على جدار خمسة قرون.upon a wall for five centuries.

THE MOUNTAINS ARE NOT MOUNTAINS

The mountains behind me are not mountains.

They are the ribs of memory.

Bending beneath time.

And the road is not a road.

It is a thread of life.

Twisting around our destiny.

The river is not merely water.

It is time.

Passing and never returning.

As for the mist,

فهو ما لا نعرفه.it is what we do not know.

And perhaps never will.

IF THEY EXTINGUISHED MY COLORS

If someone extinguished my colors,

I would still remain.

If the frame disappeared,

I would still remain.

If the museum closed,

I would remain in memory.

Because I am no longer merely a painting.

I have become an idea.

Ideas do not need walls.

To continue living.

THE FINAL SECRET

I am the Mona Lisa.

I sit in silence.

Yet my silence is a storm.

My smile is half light.

And half shadow.

And between them,

يعيش السر.the mystery lives.

Beauty is not always clarity.

Sometimes,

كلما فهمنا أقل،the less we understand,

شعرنا أكثر.the more deeply we feel.

Perhaps that is why my smile remains.

Because da Vinci never closed the question.

He left the door half open.

And left all of us

نقف أمامه.standing before it.

Five centuries have passed.

And the question is still alive.

Who is looking at whom?

Am I looking at you?

Or are you looking at me?

Or is time itself

يقف خلف الزجاج،standing behind the glass,

watching all of us?

I am the Mona Lisa.

You pass.

I remain.

Your faces change.

But my smile

فتنتظر الجيل التالي.waits for the next generation.

And the one after that.

Until the final question becomes:

Who was the painting?

And who was the viewer?

And which of us

was dreaming the other?
