Imad wrote this prose poem on the Faculty of Architecture in Damascus, at Damascus University, and dedicated it to the architect Burhan Tayara, who drew its first lines. He reads its horizontal bands and deep piers as a Levantine modernism that tames the sun, walks into the great atrium flooded with light, and climbs the crossing yellow staircases where generations of students drew their first dreams.

A Monument of Modern Syrian Identity

Dedicated to Dr. Burhan Tayara

In the heart of Damascus,

Where layers of history embrace

From the Arameans to the Umayyads

And from ancient souqs to modern universities,

Stands a building unlike any other.

Standing as an idea made visible.

A dream transformed into concrete and light.

It is the Faculty of Architecture.

Yet it is more than a faculty.

It is an architectural manifesto.

A modernist poem.

A school that teaches before instruction begins.

When Dr. Burhan Tayara drew its first lines,

He was not merely designing an academic building.

He was drawing a vision of modern Syria.

A Syria looking toward the future

Without turning its back on the past.

A Syria believing

That modernity is not imitation,

But creativity rooted in identity.

From afar,

The mass appears disciplined.

Clear.

Powerful.

As if carved from Damascus sunlight itself.

The long horizontal bands,

The deep vertical piers,

The rhythm of solids and voids,

All speak the language of modernism.

Yet it is a Levantine modernism.

A modernism familiar with yellow stone.

Familiar with the mashrabiya.

And how to tame the sun.

The façades here

Do not resist light.

They negotiate with it.

Welcoming it in the morning.

Filtering it at noon.

Embracing it at sunset.

As though the entire building

Were a giant machine for sculpting shadow.

Yet the true miracle

Begins when one enters.

There the great atrium opens.

A space rising toward the sky.

Flooded with light.

Like a cathedral of knowledge.

Light descends from above.

Dancing across the floors.

Moving along the walls.

Hour after hour.

Until the building itself becomes

A giant sundial.

A constantly changing painting.

Here thousands of students learned.

Here they drew their first dreams.

Here countless projects were born.

And here many discovered

That architecture is not walls.

But a way of understanding the world.

And the crossing yellow staircases,

Are not merely vertical circulation.

They are a stage.

A place of encounter.

A geometric poem suspended in the air.

Students ascend them

As actors ascend a stage.

As if Dr. Tayara

Wanted movement itself

To become an architectural event.

Within this building

Materials hide nothing.

Concrete is honest.

Steel is honest.

Glass is honest.

Everything declares what it truly is.

As if the faculty teaches its students

The first lesson in architecture:

Do not lie in building.

For true beauty

Begins with honesty.

And today,

After decades have passed,

The faculty still stands.

Time has left its marks.

Yet dignity remains.

And its stature remains.

And the idea remains.

For great buildings

Are not measured by concrete.

But by their ability to shape people.

And this building

Has shaped entire generations.

Of architects.

Planners.

Researchers.

And dreamers.

And therefore

The Faculty of Architecture

Is not merely a university building.

It is a cultural landmark.

A national memory.

And a silent teacher.

Still teaching its lessons

To everyone who walks its halls.

O Faculty of Architecture,

House of first dreams,

Laboratory of light and shadow,

One of Burhan Tayara’s finest creations,

Remain a witness

That true architecture

Is not built with stone alone,

But within minds.

And within souls.
