When the Blade Is Lifted from the Heart: An Eid al-Adha Poem
An Eid al-Adha reflection that reads Abraham's story as a life spared, and turns the sacrifice toward mercy, fair wages and dignity.

Eid al-Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice, falls on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah and recalls Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son, who was spared when a ram was given in his place. Imad Darouich's Eid al-Adha poem, in Arabic and English, dwells on the son who lived and on Qur'an 22:37, and asks that the feast reach the worker, the poor and anyone in our power.

I do not seek to tear down anyone’s sanctuary.
I want to open a window in it, and let humanity enter.
How narrow a temple becomes when it holds the heavens,
Yet has no room for someone hungry at its door.
I imagine fear as an ancient architect.
Raising a wall between humanity and the unknown,
Then selling people a door through that wall.
Whenever the earth trembled,
The terrified searched for something to surrender,
Before asking what they needed to understand.
That is how fear can dress itself in sacred robes.
That is how a person can kneel before an illusion,
Believing they have risen.
But when I read the story of Abraham,
I see a life that was not extinguished.
I see a hand brought to a halt.
And a son who still had a tomorrow.
And in redemption, I hear room opening for life,
So I will not turn the story into a hymn to the blade.
And I read in the Qur’an:
Neither their meat nor their blood reaches Allah, but your piety reaches Him.” (Al-Hajj 22:37)
Then why do I examine the edge of the knife,
And leave the sharpness of my cruelty unquestioned?
Why am I careful in dividing the meat,
And careless in distributing what people are owed?
What is the worth of a portion I give someone poor,
If I have swallowed their wages all year?
And what kind of celebration is this,
If the guest is fed and the worker is afraid?
I do not weigh people’s faith by what is on their plates.
Nor do I automatically grant compassion to those who give up meat.
You may eat bread,
And grind another person down with a word.
You may share a sacrificial offering,
And preserve the dignity of the person receiving it.
Compassion is tested where you have the power to hurt,
And choose to stay your hand.
Where you have the power to humiliate,
And choose to shelter another’s vulnerability.
O Lord,
Here I bring You what has burdened my soul:
Pride that made apology feel like defeat,
Anger I dressed in the robes of righteousness,
Resentment I called memory,
And fear I taught to speak in Your name.
Help me relinquish them.
I am weary of restoring my façade,
While cracks consume my foundations.
I want a celebration that reaches the home every invitation missed.
To a mother counting the cost of medicine.
To a worker waiting for his wages.
To a child who has learned to lower his eyes before what he longs for.
I want to give,
Without turning another person’s need into a stage for my image.
And to emerge from worship,
Less willing to wound anyone.
If this celebration is to change anything in me,
Let it change my hand when I am angry,
My tongue when it has power,
And my heart when it must choose between revenge and forgiveness.
I will not ask myself only: What did I offer?
I will ask: Who was safe from my cruelty?
Who received what they were owed?
And who left my presence,
Feeling that their dignity was still intact?
That is where the celebration I await begins.
When the ritual ends,
And the responsibility of compassion begins.
The Epic of Artistic Imagery in the Qur'an reads the story of Abraham among others, and The Epic of the First Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah covers the days that lead to the feast. More is in the faith and spirit collection.
