The River That Never Fills: A 9/11 Memorial Poem

Imad stands where the towers fell and reads the falling water as a prayer, and the void it never fills as a testimony to love and loss.

This 9/11 memorial poem stands at the pools in New York where the towers fell, where water falls without end into a void it never fills. Imad watches people read the names with trembling fingers, calls the memorial a prayer made of water and a sanctuary without walls, and learns that some voids are meant to remain as witnesses to love and loss.

O river that seeks no sea.

But a memory that never dies.

O void that drinks water.

Yet is never filled.

How did you become a city's heart.

Beating with silence?

How did absence become.

Heavier than stone?

The water falls without end.

Drop after drop.

As though the sky were weeping.

For the earth.

Yet the void.

Is never satisfied.

Never fulfilled.

Never closes its wound.

The trees guard the place.

Like guardians of an ancient sanctuary.

The wind walks slowly.

Afraid to awaken grief.

People draw near.

Without noise.

They read the names.

As prayers are recited.

With trembling fingers.

And silent hearts.

Every name here.

Is an entire city.

Every letter.

A life unfinished.

O water.

You do not merely fall.

You return.

To those who departed.

Carrying their messages.

Toward the heavens.

O memorial.

You are not a fountain.

Nor a basin.

Nor merely a work of art.

You are a prayer.

Made of water.

You are a sanctuary.

Without walls.

A minaret.

Built from silence.

Here the steel fell.

But dignity.

Did not fall.

Here the towers collapsed.

Yet humanity.

Rose from the ashes.

Here New York understood.

That strength.

Is not in height.

But in the ability.

To rise once again.

Every drop.

Is a witness that never lies.

Every circle of water.

Writes another name.

Into the book of memory.

O river that never fills.

You have taught us.

That some voids.

Were never meant to be filled.

But to remain.

A testimony to love.

A testimony to loss.

A testimony to humanity.

Until the final drop.
