Ten chapters follow Yusuf, a boy from Homs whose grandfather takes him into the Church of Um al-Zunnar, associated in Syriac tradition with the belt of the Virgin Mary. Over a lifetime he learns the church's layers, sees it damaged in the war from far away, and returns as an old man to pass its memory to a child.
