When the Horizon Became a Roof: Jørn Utzon and Renzo Piano

Utzon's shells rise over Sydney Harbour, Piano measures daylight for works of art, and Imad wants a roof under which anyone can lift their head.

Cover of the Sydney Opera House poem When the Horizon Became a Roof: portraits of Jørn Utzon and Renzo Piano above the white shells of the opera house joined to a glass and steel gallery roof by the sea

The Sydney Opera House was designed by the Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who won its design competition in 1957, and opened in 1973 beneath its shell roofs; Renzo Piano, born in 1937, is an Italian architect whose Menil Collection museum in Houston opened in 1987. Imad's Sydney Opera House poem sets Utzon's sails beside Piano's careful joints and asks for a roof that shelters the people beneath it.

A Note

A literary vision inspired by the architectural languages of Utzon and Piano; its imagery and interpretations belong to the writer and are not quotations attributed to them.

The Introduction

I am Imad Darouich.

I raise my eyes to the roof and imagine the sky that was here before construction.

Every building takes something from the horizon.

It must know what it will give in return.

Shade.

Light.

And a place where a person can raise their head without feeling enclosed.

The Epic

With Utzon, the roof rises as though the sea has left a wave upon the land.

Shell above shell.

The forms advance into the air, and the horizon remains present between them.

I see the Sydney Opera House and imagine sound waiting inside these sails.

Before the music begins, the building has already drawn breath.

Yet behind that breath lies engineering that never sleeps.

A joint that must fit.

A shell that must bear weight.

And a worker standing high above, securing a piece the passerby will imagine light.

I place that labor within my wonder.

For the roof’s image is incomplete when the hands are absent from it.

Then comes Renzo Piano.

I approach a small joint and see the breadth of the idea.

Glass meets metal.

An edge refines the light.

And a roof distributes its openings until daylight becomes habitable.

I contemplate light falling upon a work of art.

It must reveal it and preserve it.

That delicate balance resembles a hand that knows how to touch.

I see technology become care.

Within that care, the architect’s strength appears.

Between Utzon’s sails and Piano’s precision, I search for a roof that carries more than its weight.

It carries an encounter.

And a voice needing someone to hear it.

And the step of a child discovering that the place is larger than their fear.

I want a roof that leaves the city a way inside.

Through it, morning enters with its changes.

And a cloud appears upon the floor as a passing shadow.

So the seated person knows the world continues.

Even when they pause to rest.

I am the son of a place whose roof I know can disappear.

That is why I never pass beneath a safe roof without feeling what its presence means.

I hear rain upon it.

And I imagine a hand switching off the lamp, trusting the night.

That trust is part of the design.

It needs calculation as much as it needs mercy.

The Ending

O Lord, help us raise roofs without lowering the dreams of those beneath them.

Through Utzon, I contemplate a building that gives the horizon a new form.

Through Piano, I contemplate a detail that gives a person a better day.

Then I return to the page.

I draw the roof.

And I draw the light that will pass through it.

Beneath it, I leave room for someone to raise their head.

I want that person to feel the sky has come closer.

And that the earth has finally made room for them.

Piano's museum for New York is read in The Whitney Museum: When the City Became a Gallery, and more architects of roofs and light fill the architects collection.
