Mamoun Fahham: So the Future Is Not Built upon the Body of a Place
Imad's tribute, in Arabic and English, to an architect and planner, and to plans that leave room for the people inside them.

Mamoun Fahham is the architect and planner honoured in this tribute by Imad Darouich, which follows the projects the text credits to him: the Dummar district of northwest Damascus, begun in the 1970s, a plan for Raqqa on the Euphrates, a hotel in Bosra and student housing. At each stop the text asks how a city can gain a future without losing its past.
Note: A literary tribute to Dr. Mamoun Fahham, architect and expert in planning and sustainable development. It draws on the projects and experience he described in his published 2025 interview, and on the testimony of an architect who worked in his office. The poetic imagery is my own, not attributed quotations.
I am an architect.
I know a city can expand… while its people are confined.
And an elegant plan can conceal an error the size of a life.
That is why, when I read Mamoun Fahham’s name, I place the human being upon the table.
Before the table becomes a city.
From Alexandria to Paris
In his account of his career, he recalls graduating from Alexandria University and pursuing further studies at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Sorbonne, in the social sciences of urbanism.
I imagine the map widening before him.
Then turning over.
On its reverse appears a resident’s face.
For every city drawn, another city lives behind the drawing.
There begins the weight of knowledge.
When you become responsible for what the perspective does not reveal.
New Dummar: Al-Sham Al-Jadida
He recalls heading the suburb’s urban planning office, covering approximately six thousand housing units, alongside centers and gardens.
Six thousand doors.
I speak the number, and faces emerge from it.
A child seeking a friend.
And a mother wanting to see the path from her window.
And a man returning weary, needing the journey home to be easy.
Here, planning is tested.
In the distance between a home and life.
Raqqa and Its Urban Plan
Among the works he describes are Raqqa’s urban plan and a rehabilitation plan for its city wall.
Beside the Euphrates, I see water drawing a line no ruler can imitate.
And see the wall struggling to carry its age.
How do you give a city tomorrow without stripping away its yesterday?
How do you open a road and leave memory a place through which to pass?
Such questions require more than concrete.
They need an eye that sees time within stone.
Bosra Hotel, Al-Zahrawi Hospital, and University Housing
These projects appear in his account of his work, including student housing for Damascus and Tishreen universities.
In Bosra, I imagine a guest arriving with the weariness of travel.
And history standing outside the window.
In the hospital, the distance between two doors becomes a matter of compassion.
One fewer step for someone in pain.
And light reaching a bed.
In student housing, a small room receives a great dream.
A young person sets down a bag.
And begins, far from family, to build the self.
Mamoun,
How greatly a wall’s task can change.
At one moment, it shelters sleep.
At another, it holds pain.
At another, it gives learning a quiet night.
The Office That Becomes a School
Architect Bassem Barghouti recalls working in his office for four years, beginning in 1979, learning construction documentation and gaining experience on large projects.
This is a testimony whose weight I understand.
For architecture is tested when the drawing reaches the worker’s hand.
When the idea asks for a detail capable of holding it.
There, an architect learns that a dream needs a joint.
And that beauty may depend upon a millimeter.
The Earth Within the Project
His professional activity connects environmental concerns, heritage, and sustainable development; at the Syrian American Engineers Association’s 2026 conference, he addressed directing investment toward Syria’s recovery needs.
I place a tree upon the plan.
It asks me for water.
I place a neighborhood.
It asks me for a school.
I place a future.
It asks: Where will those who cannot afford it live?
Here, the profession becomes a stance.
And planning becomes a promise we must be able to keep.
Dr. Mamoun Fahham,
I salute experience when it extends its hand to the next generation.
And knowledge when it steps down from the platform into the street.
There, between water, a tree, and a home, the homeland waits.
Let us build what allows life to return… and remain.
A larger plan for the capital is imagined in A Master Plan for Damascus: When the Four Directions Move Together, and design that starts from the person is the subject of The Human at the Heart of Design: Organic Architecture as an Invitation to Life. More lives in building are in the architects collection.
