A Sky Held by a Thread: Frei Otto and Shigeru Ban

Otto's cables share the load, Ban's paper tubes become a frame, and Imad checks every joint before he pictures the first night of rain under the roof.

Cover of A Sky Held by a Thread: portraits of Frei Otto and Shigeru Ban above a membrane roof on masts and cables sheltering a paper-tube house where a family rests, with sketches of tube joints

Frei Otto (1925 to 2015) was a German architect and engineer known for lightweight tensile and membrane structures, and Shigeru Ban, a Japanese architect born in 1957, builds with paper tubes; together they made the paper-tube gridshell of the Japanese Pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hanover. Imad's poem sets Frei Otto and Shigeru Ban beside a fallen house and asks how a light structure becomes a safe home.

A literary vision inspired by Frei Otto’s lightweight structures and Shigeru Ban’s experiments with paper construction; its imagery and interpretations belong to the writer and are not quotations attributed to them.

The Introduction

I am Imad Darouich.

I have seen a heavy house fall while its key remained in its owner’s hand.

Since then, I have asked every roof who will shelter beneath it.

And I ask a material how long it needs to become shelter.

When rain arrives, the distance between an idea and its duty narrows.

The Epic

With Frei Otto, a membrane rises upon a tensioned network.

Force spreads among slender strands.

Each strand bears its share, and the space beneath expands.

In that tension, I see cooperation written in the air.

No single element can preserve the roof’s form.

The edge needs the anchor.

The peak needs what draws it toward the ground.

For something to rise, things must perfect their relations with one another.

Sunlight passes through the membrane.

Light grows gentler upon faces.

I see the sky brought closer without falling upon us.

Then Shigeru Ban places a paper tube in my hands.

I imagine it and feel the material I once wrote upon asking for a place in construction.

The paper that carried accounts of destruction can enter the making of shelter.

The tubes repeat.

The frame rises.

The human page moves from news to be read into a life to be protected.

Here wonder reaches its depths.

A material that appears fragile is given knowledge, joints, and calculation, and performs work we did not expect of it.

I think of the human being too.

How often have we judged someone’s strength by the appearance of exhaustion?

And how many hands did that person need before being able to stand?

Between Otto’s network and Ban’s tubes, architecture becomes an exercise in precise trust.

Trust that is tested.

And calculated.

And knows water, fire, and wind before opening the door.

For mercy needs craftsmanship.

Good intentions alone cannot hold a roof above a child.

I want shelter to preserve more than the body.

A place where a mother can change her clothes in privacy.

A corner where a child can sleep without seeing everyone’s movements.

And a door its occupant can close by hand.

When homes are taken away, that handle becomes the beginning of reclaiming the world.

The Ending

O Lord, give our knowledge speed when shelter is delayed, and precision when life is entrusted to it.

Through Frei Otto, I contemplate strength distributed so space can expand.

Through Shigeru Ban, I contemplate a material exceeding what we have grown used to asking of it.

Then I return to drawing.

I place the roof upon the page.

Beneath it, I draw a bed.

I calculate the strands’ tension and check the joints.

Then I imagine the first night a person sleeps there.

Rain falls.

The blanket stays dry.

At that moment, I know how much a small idea must bear.

Each architect has a book of his own, Frei Otto: When Architecture Learned to Be Lighter Than Air and Shigeru Ban: When Paper Became Architecture, and Ban's thinking on temporary homes is read in Shigeru Ban on Shelter.
