When Steel Learned to Fly: Santiago Calatrava and Frank Gehry

Calatrava's white ribs and Gehry's titanium lift metal into flight, and an architect brings the wonder back down to the door handle.

Cover for Calatrava and Gehry: portraits of both architects beside white ribbed wings rising over a titanium building, with their sketches in an open notebook

Santiago Calatrava, the Spanish-Swiss architect and engineer, is known for structures that resemble living bodies, among them the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in New York, and Frank Gehry wrapped the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, opened in 1997, in titanium. Imad's prose poem reads Calatrava and Gehry together, from ribs that carry space to metal that mirrors a changing sky, then returns the wonder to the threshold and the bench.

A literary vision inspired by the architectural languages of Calatrava and Gehry; its imagery and interpretations belong to the writer and are not quotations attributed to them.

The Introduction

I am Imad Darouich.

I know steel through calculations: weight, strength, and a limit that must not be exceeded.

Then I see it rise above the city, as though the earth has released a bird.

I stand beneath the wing.

All this weight, yet above my head a feeling of flight.

Here begins the wonder I want to build.

The Epic

With Calatrava, structure takes the form of a body preparing to move.

White ribs carry space.

They repeat until their span becomes a rhythm read by the footstep.

I pass beneath them and feel the roof rise within my chest.

Within the joint, strength lies hidden.

At the edge, steel reaches the farthest point imagination and calculation can sustain.

I see a wing.

And I remember the hands that secured its bolts high above the ground.

Lightness has workers who know its weight.

Then comes Gehry.

Metal curves, and the sky’s image fractures across its surface.

A cloud passes, and the building changes.

The sun sets, and titanium holds its final fire.

I approach the façade.

I see the city reflected on a skin that will not settle into a single image.

The street is straight; its reflection is a wave.

The window is rectangular; its image opens like a flower.

I feel the building giving the world a chance to see itself anew.

Between Calatrava’s ribs and Gehry’s folds, mass breaks free from a form we have grown accustomed to.

Yet the ground remains.

And upon it stands a person wanting to know where to enter.

Here I bring my eyes back from the roof to the threshold.

I want wonder to reach the feet.

To a clear path.

And a seat in the shade.

And an entrance that does not consume the strength of someone arriving tired.

The façade may soar in photographs.

But its test begins when a visitor touches the door handle.

I do not measure a wing’s success by its height alone.

I look at the life that has been able to shelter beneath it.

And I look at the gleaming metal.

Has it returned light to the city, or cast it harshly into the eyes of passersby?

These questions enter the drawing with me.

They sit between the curve and the joint.

And they remain until I give them a place in the building.

The Ending

O Lord, give our imagination courage, and give our courage mercy.

Through Calatrava, I contemplate a structure that makes the bearing of a roof visible.

Through Gehry, I contemplate a surface that makes the passage of time visible.

Then I return to steel.

I calculate it precisely.

And I draw its wing.

Beneath it, I place a bench with room for two.

For when steel learns to fly, I want the human being to find a place to rest.

Each architect has a book, Santiago Calatrava: When Stone Learned to Move and Frank Gehry: The Architect Who Made Buildings Refuse to Stand Still, and Gehry's hall in Los Angeles has its own poem, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles: A Building That Became Music.
