When the Sky Grew from Water: Steven Holl and Toyo Ito
Holl's watercolors turn into rooms of travelling light and Ito's branching structures let the city in, so an architect leaves room for what will come.

Steven Holl, the New York architect, is also a watercolorist, and Toyo Ito, who won the Pritzker Prize in 2013, designed the Sendai Mediatheque in Japan, a library and art gallery completed in 2001. Imad's prose poem follows Steven Holl and Toyo Ito from a wash of color on paper to daylight travelling through a room and a structure where many paths cross, and leaves space in the drawing for life to surprise it.

The Introduction
I am Imad Darouich.
I draw the building in ink, knowing light will draw it again.
What appears fixed on paper changes when a cloud passes.
What I calculate as space fills with a life I could not foresee.
So I leave room in the drawing for what will come.
The Epic
With Steven Holl, I see watercolor move toward architecture.
A transparent wash spreads across the paper.
It meets an edge and gathers there.
I contemplate it as an experiment in light before the wall exists.
Then the mass rises.
Sunlight enters through a measured opening.
It touches one surface and reflects onto another.
The eye receives light that has traveled through the building.
Here the room becomes a delicate instrument for transforming daylight.
I walk through it.
What I see changes with my position.
An edge that was obscure emerges.
A surface that was silent fills with color.
I feel my body completing the drawing.
Then Toyo Ito’s architecture opens another path.
I see structure take the form of a living network.
Elements branch.
Movement, light, and services intertwine with them.
The building becomes a field through which life moves in many directions.
I imagine the city entering without leaving its rhythm at the door.
A reader seeking quiet.
A young person pausing before a screen.
And friends meeting, then parting along their paths.
All of them need an order that allows their differences.
From here I see architecture as the capacity to connect what we draw separately.
Structure with movement.
Light with human time.
The building with the street that brings its visitors.
Between Holl’s water and Ito’s networks, my hand changes upon the page.
I draw the path before enclosing the room.
And imagine who will walk along it.
Can that person tell where to go?
Can they find a place to pause?
Can they choose closeness to others, or a little solitude?
For transparency needs mercy.
And openness needs a place that preserves a person’s privacy.
I want the city to enter the building.
And I want the weary person to find within it a corner that asks nothing of them.
There I place a window.
Before it, a tree.
And upon the bench, enough space for two arms to rest.
The Ending
O Lord, give our ideas a life beyond their first image.
Through Holl, I contemplate light that becomes complete only as we pass through it.
Through Ito, I contemplate a system spacious enough for different movements.
Then I wet the brush.
I place blue upon the paper.
Water spreads a little beyond the boundary.
I let it.
For something may appear there that I did not know I needed.
And when the drawing becomes a building, I want it to retain this capacity:
To give life a place, then allow it to surprise him.
Each architect has a book, Steven Holl: Architecture of Light and Phenomena and Toyo Ito: Architecture as a Second Skin, and light framed by a wall returns in When the Sun Opened a Wall.
