When the Sun Opened a Wall: Luis Barragán and James Turrell

Barragán's colored walls and Turrell's framed sky teach an architect to build places where people notice light, time and their own mood.

Cover for Luis Barragán and James Turrell: portraits of both men above a courtyard of pink and yellow walls around a still pool, with a glowing opening onto the sky

Luis Barragán (1902 to 1988) was the Mexican architect who won the Pritzker Prize in 1980, and James Turrell is the American artist whose skyspaces are rooms open to the sky through an aperture in the roof. Imad's prose poem brings Luis Barragán and James Turrell together: a wall of deep color doubled in still water, a framed sky that shows the passing hours, and a seat where anyone can simply rest.

A Note

A literary vision inspired by Barragán’s architecture and Turrell’s light art; its imagery and interpretations belong to the writer and are not quotations attributed to them.

The Introduction

I am Imad Darouich.

I know a wall as it rises: a material that divides, a surface that waits.

Yet I have seen color give it a depth no section drawing reveals.

And I have seen light open a distance within it without removing a stone.

Here this encounter begins.

Between a hand that builds the boundaries of space and an eye that changes how we feel them.

The Epic

With Barragán, the wall stands in a full color.

Deep red.

Pink whose warmth changes with the day.

And yellow that keeps something of the sun after it moves away.

I approach the surface.

I see its fine roughness holding the light.

Every small ridge makes a shadow.

From thousands of shadows, a living color is born.

Then water appears.

It holds the wall upside down and lets it tremble.

Here, mass learns a movement it cannot make alone.

I see stone standing still and its image breathing.

And I think of my memory.

A house gone from the earth, its image still moving within me.

Then comes Turrell.

Light comes forward until it becomes what I am looking at.

My ability to judge distance weakens.

My gaze reaches into a depth whose end I cannot see.

Standing becomes an experience of learning to see.

An opening in the roof frames the sky.

Its edges remain fixed.

The blue within them changes.

I sit beneath it.

Minutes pass, and I feel them in my eyes.

I no longer need a clock to know evening is approaching.

The sky itself reveals time.

Between Barragán’s wall and Turrell’s opening, I see architecture giving attention a place.

The body’s movement slows.

And the world’s details begin to emerge.

The edge of a shadow advancing.

A small ripple in water.

And a color I thought fixed, changing as I watch.

I want this attention within what I build.

A place where a person regains the ability to notice life.

Yet I know wonder can tire the eye.

So I review the light’s intensity.

And leave a clear path.

And a seat where someone can sit without becoming part of a display.

For a person arrives with a changing mood.

They may want to contemplate.

Or they may simply want to rest.

The place must have room for both desires.

The Ending

O Lord, help me see the blessing in light before I learn to distribute it well.

Through Barragán, I contemplate a wall gaining its presence through color, water, and shade.

Through Turrell, I contemplate an eye discovering that its way of seeing can change.

Then I return to drawing.

I raise a wall.

I choose its color.

And leave an opening for the sky above it.

At sunset, the sun will withdraw.

A color I never placed in the paint tin will appear upon the surface.

There I know the building has begun to live beyond my hand.

Barragán advised Louis Kahn on the plaza of the Salk Institute, and Kahn's life is told in Louis Kahn: The Epic of the Architect Who Made Light Dwell Within Stone; light at work inside a building returns in Steven Holl: Architecture of Light and Phenomena and in When the Sky Grew from Water.
