Antoni Gaudí: When He Left Alone and Barcelona Returned with Him

Gaudí left the Sagrada Família alone one June evening in 1926; after a tram struck him, the whole of Barcelona walked him back to it.

Antoni Gaudí was struck by a tram on the Gran Via in Barcelona on 7 June 1926, on his way to the church of Sant Felip Neri, and died in the Santa Creu Hospital on 10 June, aged 73. Imad tells the death of Antoni Gaudí as a true story with no invented scenes: the hanging chain models, the last years given only to the Sagrada Família, and the funeral that followed him to its crypt.

He did not begin the project from nothing.

But he transformed its entire future.

He did not want to build a conventional church.

He wanted a space that felt alive.

Columns branching like trees.

Ceilings resembling forest canopies.

And towers rising above Barcelona as though growing from the earth.

He did not rely on flat drawings alone.

He built physical models.

He suspended strings and chains.

Then he attached weights to them.

Gravity drew the curves before his eyes.

When he inverted the model, the chains became arches.

He did not fight the laws of nature.

He listened to them.

And transformed them into architecture.

The years passed.

The project grew.

Gaudí grew with it.

In 1914, he stopped accepting other projects.

He devoted his final years entirely to the Sagrada Família.

He established his workshop on the construction site.

There he drew.

Calculated.

Built models.

And examined the smallest details.

The church rose slowly.

More slowly than his life.

He knew he would not see it completed.

Yet he did not stop.

On the evening of June 7, 1926, he left the construction site.

He was walking toward the chapel of Sant Felip Neri.

He left alone.

On the way, he was struck by a tram.

His clothes were simple.

He had left its site alone.

He returned to it followed by an entire city.

He was buried in the basilica’s crypt.

Beneath the project to which he had given more than forty years of his life.

The architect departed.

But construction did not stop.

His models passed to a new generation.

Then to generations after them.

The tools changed.

Computers arrived.

Construction technologies advanced.

But the idea remained.

That architecture can learn from nature.

That light can build space alongside stone.

That an architect may plant an idea they will not live to see completed.

This is not merely the story of a building.

It is the story of a man who knew his life was shorter than his dream.

He did not make the dream smaller.

He made it clear enough for others to continue.

We learn from Gaudí that an architect does not work for himself alone.

He may begin a line.

A student not yet born may complete it.

He may raise a column.

Future generations may place the roof upon it.

He may depart before the building is complete.

But an honest vision is not buried with its creator.

It passes from hand to hand.

From one age to another.

Until the dream begun by one human being becomes the memory of an entire city.

On 10 June 2026, the hundredth anniversary of his death, Pope Leo XIV blessed the basilica's completed Tower of Jesus Christ. His whole life is in Antoni Gaudí: The Architect Who Taught Stone to Pray, his way of learning from nature in When Stone Learned How to Grow, and the unfinished church in Sagrada Família: The Throne of Light Unfinished.
