The Stone That Released a Wing: Carlo Scarpa and Alexander Calder

An architect reads Scarpa's narrow joint between stone and metal beside Calder's turning mobile, then draws a stone with room above it for moving air.

Imad Darouich's cover for Carlo Scarpa and Alexander Calder: a red and blue mobile turning above stepped stone terraces and a pool, with portraits of the two men

Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) was an Italian architect born in Venice whose works include the Castelvecchio Museum in Verona, and Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was the American sculptor known for mobiles, sculptures moved by currents of air. In this prose poem, Imad Darouich sets Carlo Scarpa and Alexander Calder side by side, reading the narrow joint where stone meets metal beside the small pivot that lets a mobile turn.

A literary vision inspired by Carlo Scarpa’s details and Alexander Calder’s moving sculptures; its imagery and interpretations belong to the writer and are not quotations attributed to them.

The Introduction

I am Imad Darouich.

I know how stone holds its place.

Yet every day I learn how to leave room for life to move.

Sometimes architecture begins with a monumental mass.

And sometimes with a small distance between two materials.

Into that distance, light enters.

The Epic

With Scarpa, I draw close enough to see the joint.

Stone does not conceal its edge.

Metal reaches it precisely, leaving each its own presence.

Between them lies a line of shadow.

Narrow in measurement.

Deep in its effect.

I see the two materials meet without either losing its voice.

And I think of people.

How much does an encounter need a measured closeness that preserves each person’s boundaries?

A foot advances upon a step.

The level changes slightly.

The eye senses that another place has begun.

I see the threshold carrying the meaning of passage.

And I check its height.

For wonder that trips a foot needs to be drawn again.

Then something moves above my head.

Calder.

A slender arm carries color.

And a red edge turns in the air.

The distances between shapes change.

Yet balance remains.

I raise my eyes.

I see a calculation that allows matter to answer a breeze.

That is lightness mastered.

Behind it lies a known weight.

And a carefully set pivot.

A small joint whose precision carries the movement of the whole work.

Here Scarpa and Calder meet.

In a detail the eye almost misses, upon which everything we see depends.

One gives depth to the step.

The other gives the gaze a path.

I walk beneath the sculpture.

Its shadow moves across the floor.

It passes over the stone joint and continues on its way.

I see stillness and movement writing the place together.

I imagine a building retaining this capacity.

Safe walls.

Precise details.

And within it, air able to reveal its presence.

For a place where nothing changes deprives us of noticing time.

I want daylight to leave its trace.

And wind to find something that listens to it.

And a person to raise their head and discover a movement they were not required to produce.

The Ending

O Lord, give our hands precision that protects what we love, and imagination that gives it room to live.

Through Scarpa, I contemplate the value of a small distance.

Through Calder, I contemplate the breadth of movement a joint can carry.

Then I draw a stone.

I refine its point of connection.

Above it, I leave space for a suspended sculpture.

Air will pass.

And the red will move a little.

A new shadow will appear at the feet of someone passing.

Perhaps they will pause.

That brief pause deserves all this care.
